Game Story

SALT LAKE CITY (Ticker) -- After remaining winless all-time in the Delta Center, the Detroit Pistons were left wondering if Karl Malone or the officials did more damage.

Malone scored six of his 33 points in the final 2 1/2 minutes but it was a missed call with 2.9 seconds left that sealed the Pistons 10th consecutive loss in Utah.

Detroit led 87-82 with 2:27 left when Malone buried a fadeaway. He added two free throws 31 seconds later to draw the Jazz within a point and gave Utah the lead with an 18-footer with 47 seconds to go.

Grant Hill missed a 19-footer 20 seconds later and Detroit opted not to foul. They forced a 3-pointer by Bryon Russell a split-second after the buzzer for a shot-clock violation sounded. But officials allowed play to continue as Detroit stopped and an unguarded Jeff Hornacek sank a 3-pointer at the horn to account for the final margin.

Detroit coach Alvin Gentry erupted on the sideline pleading for a review or conference but the officials stood by the no-call and left the court flanked by security personnel.

"Cheated is a strong word," Gentry said. "They didn't make a call that should have been made. I don't think they deliberately did it, but I think that it was an obvious 24-second violation. I don't think anybody on the floor disagrees with that.

"They (referees) never make an explanation so that's a waste of time. The only thing that can happen is, maybe they can look at it at the NBA office. Because if I complain about them, I'm going to get fined."

As expected, the Jazz saw things a bit differently.

"You have to play until the whistle blows," Malone said. "When Bryon shot the ball, nobody reacted but Horny and he got it and hit the three, so you got to play it out no matter what happens."

"When Bryon threw the ball up there and I chased it down in the corner, there was still 1.6, 1.7 on the clock. So I know they thought the clock had run out. I don't know what replays will show."

Lindsey Hunter scored 24 points and Jerry Stackhouse added 21 for Detroit, which fell to 0-9 at the Delta Center. They are one of four teams not to win in the building, which opened in 1991.

Detroit has lost three straight overall, eight in a row on the road and 13 of the last 15 against Utah.

The Pistons led by as many as seven in the final period and held an 85-79 edge with 3:45 to play when John Stockton buried a 3-pointer off a feed from Malone.

Stackhouse sank two free throws with 3:28 remaining to push the advantage to 87-82 but Malone took over thereafter.

After the teams swapped empty possessions, Malone sank a 14-foot fadeaway jumper from the right wing. Hill missed a 17-footer from the left side and Christian Laettner put the rebound home. But the Pistons' forward was called for an offensive foul and the basket was nullified.

Malone made the ensuing free throws to slice the deficit to 87-86 and Detroit saw Stackhouse miss a 14-footer and Hill the tip. Stockton raced into the frontcourt and found Malone all alone on the right wing but the All-Star missed the open jumper.

Hunter missed for Detroit on the other end and Malone finally put the Jazz on top with a 16-footer over Terry Mills. Hill missed wildly for Detroit with 27 seconds to go but the Pistons played strong defense, setting up the final frantic seconds.

"You have to make stops ... that's what we said every time out," Jazz coach Jerry Sloan. "That's not the first time we've ever said that you have to make stops. We've said that a few times this year."

Utah shot just 36 percent (28-of-77) from the field but held a 48-37 rebounding edge and made 29-of-33 free throws. Malone was 17-of-20 from the free throw line and grabbed 13 boards.

The Pistons also shot well from the line, making 19-of-21 attempts.
