Game Story

SALT LAKE CITY (Ticker) -- The Atlanta Hawks lost their sixth straight in the Delta Center because they could not find 6-9, 255-pound Armen Gilliam.

Gilliam's uncontested layup with 2.9 seconds left snapped a tie and lifted the Utah Jazz to their fifth win in six games, a 96-94 triumph over the Hawks.

After Karl Malone, who led Utah with 25 points, tied the contest with 53 seconds remaining, the teams traded empty possesions and turnovers. The Jazz had the ball in the hands of point guard John Stockton in the final seconds and spread the floor.

Inexplicably, Gilliam was left wide open beneath the basket and easily converted Stockton's pass into the go-ahead bucket.

"We ran sort of an old fashioned play for us and just kept looking for whatever came up and everybody left Armen underneath," Stockton said. "I was really glad to see it. You don't expect to see a guy that wide open and we don't often look down there."

"I told Armen play off Malone," Jazz coach Jerry Sloan said. "If he goes to the basket you step high, if he steps back, you go under the basket. That's just a you-go, I-go type of thing. You play off each other."

The Hawks inbounded the ball past halfcourt and Dikembe Mutombo was fouled with one second to go. Atlanta again inbounded but Jimmy Jackson's rushed 3-pointer was well off the mark.

"It was a nice win for us and the main thing is we didn't lose our composure down the stretch," Malone said. "We had some good defensive stops and had some good looks."

Isaiah Rider scored 22 points and Jackson added 15 for the Hawks, who have not won at the Delta Center since February 13, 1993.

The Jazz trailed 74-73 entering the final period and were down 94-88 with 2:35 remaining. But Malone sank a short hook from the right blocks and Olden Polynice had an eight-footer with 1:42 left. Malone knotted the contest just under a minute later with a 15-footer, setting the stage for a frantic final minute.

Bimbo Coles missed an 11-footer with 25 seconds to go but Alan Henderson grabbed the rebound and was tied up. On the jump ball, Stockton was whistled for a violation. Coles was whistled for a questionable offensive foul with 23 seconds to play and Utah got the ball back. Stockton then ran the offense to perfection before finding Gilliam for the decisive hoop.

"We missed a couple of shots and they score then we get a terrible call at the end there on Bimbo Coles," Hawks coach Lenny Wilkins said. "It's a terrible call and I don't care any way you look at it, it was not a good call."

"The way I saw it, it was a (bad) call," Coles said. "You don't make calls like that with 25 seconds to go in the game."

Mutombo finished with 12 points and 16 rebounds. All five Atlanta starters scored in double figures and LaPhonso Ellis added 10 points, on 5-of-5 shooting, off the bench.

The Hawks shot 52 percent (41-of-79) from the field. Utah made 47 percent (30-of-83) of its attempts, including 7-of-10 3-point attempts.
