Game Story

CHARLOTTE, North Carolina (Ticker) -- Derrick Coleman scored a season-high 32 points and Anthony Mason recorded his first triple-double of the season, leading the Charlotte Hornets to a 102-97 victory over the Houston Rockets.

Coleman made 14-of-22 shots from the floor, including 3-of-3 from 3-point range, and grabbed 12 rebounds. Mason collected 12 points, 11 assists and 10 rebounds for his fifth career triple-double and first since the 1996-97 season.

Coleman scored all seven of his fourth-quarter points in the final six minutes, helping the Hornets erase an 87-83 deficit. They have won six of their last eight games since Mason was given point-forward responsibilities.

"Derrick is a horse right now," Hornets coach Paul Silas said. "Every night he's coming with it. He's tough to stop down low. He's our go to guy. I don't think we van expect 32 points from him every night, but he has really been producing."

"I think the point-forward is a natural position for me," Mason said. "It's an advantage because I can see the whole floor. I can make some passes that shorter guys might not."

Rookie Steve Francis had 24 points and eight assists for Houston, which suffered its sixth straight road loss.

"We put a good effort forward, we just didn't get any breaks at the end," Francis said. "I thought we did an excellent job stopping Eddie Jones but Mason gets a triple-double and Coleman played well."

Jones struggled all night, scoring only nine points, 11 below his season average, on 3-of-13 shooting. But his teammates more than picked up the slack as Charlotte improved to 22-5 at home.

"There's going to be nights where you can't put anything in the basket," Jones said. "Hopefully, I won't have another one soon."

The Rockets battled back from an 11-point deficit early in the third quarter to take a 65-63 lead with 5:45 left. Houston nailed 13-of-22 shot attempts in the quarter, with Kenny Thomas scoring 12 points and Francis adding six in the period.

Houston entered the fouth quarter trailing 75-74 but took an 83-81 lead on a 3-pointer by Francis with 8:56 left. Cuttino Mobley's layup extended the lead to four and after the teams traded baskets Coleman answered with a short jumper and David Wesley drained an 18-footer to tie the game at 87-87 with 4:06 on the clock.

Charlotte took the lead for good, 91-89, on Wesley's driving layup with 2:48 left and Coleman added a 3-pointer to push the lead to five at the 2:26 mark.

"It's good to pull out a win in the fourth quarter," Jones said. "We got comfortable again in the end. We've been struggling putting away elite teams at home. We lost a few games that we could have won."

Wesley finished with 21 points on 7-of-11 shooting and Elden Campbell had 14 and seven rebounds for the Hornets, who shot 49 percent (41-of-83) from the floor, 94 percent (16-of-17) from the foul line and held a 47-37 rebounding edge.

Charlotte announced that center Brad Miller will have surgery to repair torn meniscus cartilage in his left knee on Friday. Miller, who averages 7.7 points and 5.4 rebounds per game, will be sidelined for up to six weeks.

Thomas scored 20 points and grabbed eight rebounds, but was held scoreless in the fourth quarter. Mobley had 15 off the bench for Houston, which also shot 49 percent (41-of-83) but went to the foul line only 11 times, making seven.

"We can't put a big negative on this game," Rockets coach Rudy Tomjanovich said. "There were a lot of good things that happened. Coleman was phenomenal. He's one of the most talented guys in the league. He just has all the tools. We left him wide open and he was the hottest guy on the floor in crunch time."

"We didn't take advantage of our opportunities," Francis said. "I feel we have a good team. The sky's the limit for us. I believe we can make the playoffs."
