Game Story

WASHINGTON (Ticker) -- The Washington Wizards are not the only team with problems.

Mitch Richmond scored 26 points as the Wizards raced to a big lead and coasted to a 126-101 victory over the struggling Milwaukee Bucks.

The Wizards came into the contest with the second-worst record in the Eastern Conference but did not resemble that team tonight. They shot 68 percent (28-of-41) in the first half to open a commanding 72-45 advantage.

The 72-point first half was nine short of a franchise record.

Washington finished at 58 percent (50-of-86) and made 8-of-12 3-pointers.

Jahidi White added 18 points and 11 rebounds and Tracy Murray also scored 18 points for the Wizards, who recorded their best offensive output of the season and stopped a seven-game losing streak.

Washington also collected a season-high 37 assists, led by Chris Whitney with eight and Rod Strickland with seven. Tracy Murray was 4-of-6 from 3-point range and scored 18 points off the bench. Fellow reserve Aaron Williams added 15 on 6-of-9 shooting and Strickland finished with 14 points.

"It's a mystery," Richmond said of the scoring explosion. "As a player, looking around the room I think we all feel this way, where has it been? Some nights we do show signs of improvement, sometimes we take steps back. It's a mystery. I really can't pinpoint what it is."

"I'll take it," added Wizards coach Darrell Walker. "I hope it stays around for a while. I thought the effort was outstanding from the beginning to the end tonight."

Ray Allen netted 17 points and Glenn Robinson 15 for floundering Milwaukee, which has lost six of its last seven games to fall back to the .500 mark at 27-27.

"They shot the ball well, give them credit," said Robinson. "They had it going tonight. Juwan (Howard) played well, Mitch played well. All their starters played well and Tracy came off and hit some big buckets.

"Washington has a lot of talent and a lot of scorers. They have a lot of guys who can give you 30 points on any given night, and they all played well together. That's something we have to do a better job of -- playing better together."

The Wizards never trailed and used a 15-8 spurt in the first quarter that Strickland capped with a jumper for a 26-16 advantage with 3:24 left. They led 32-23 after one period.

Milwaukee was still within nine points four minutes into the second quarter. But the Wizards took control with a 23-6 surge, extending to a 63-37 cushion with 2:43 to play before halftime. White and Strickland had six points apiece in the burst.

"They got off to such a good start, it was hard for us to get back in it," Robinson said. "We've just got to play hard. It just looked like we weren't even into it today. We were just ready to get the game over with. We wanted to just come in, get a win and go home. It's not like that."

Bucks coach George Karl agreed.

"Washington played hungry and angry," he said. "They just came off a road trip where they were in basically every game and got beat in the fourth quarter. They played with a lot more passion and edge than we did."

Wizards forward Michael Smith left for X-rays on his injured right elbow in the third quarter after picking up five points and three assists.
