Game Story

NEW YORK (Ticker) -- For the second time in as many weeks, Vince Carter was too much for the New York Knicks to handle.

Carter scored 33 points, including 15 in the third quarter, and added nine rebounds and nine assists as the Toronto Raptors snapped a three-game losing streak with a 99-88 victory over New York.

Carter scored 13 points in a 15-2 third-quarter burst as the Raptors grabbed a 67-64 advantage with 53 seconds remaining. Toronto never trailed thereafter in posting its second win over New York in eight days. Carter had 29 points in the Raptors' 91-70 rout on February 15 in Toronto.

Patrick Ewing led the Knicks with 24 points as he passed Adrian Dantley for 15th on the all-time scoring list with 23,181 points. Ewing hurdled Elgin Baylor on Monday.

The Knicks saw their five-game home winning streak end and their three-game overall winning streak stopped. They fell one-half game behind Miami into second place in the Atlantic Division.

A five-foot jumper by Ewing with 4:08 left in the third quarter gave the Knicks their largest lead at 62-52. But Carter brought back his team, starting the pivotal run with two free throws and capping it with a running jumper.

"I don't know what I was feeling, honestly," said Carter, who was 12-of-21 from the field. "I was just putting it up and it was going in. I was feeling comfortable and I just stepped it up."

The Raptors closed the third quarter on a 19-5 run, including a running jumper by former Knick Doug Christie with no time left, and entered the final period with a 71-67 lead.

New York got within two as Kurt Thomas sank two free throws with 6:39 left to cut Toronto's lead to 83-81. The Raptors scored seven of the next eight points as Antonio Davis had half his 10, including two free throws with 4:08 to play.

After a basket by New York's Allan Houston, Carter scored five consecutive points, including a thunderous dunk with 2:12 remaining, as Toronto built a commanding 97-86 cushion.

"When you come here to New York, everybody wants to play well when they get here," said former Knick Charles Oakley, who had 11 points, six rebounds and six assists. "New York is a good team, and we might have to play them in the playoffs. Teams are going to zone in on Vince, so it's up to the other guys to step up."

Christie went 7-of-12 from the field and scored 22 points and Tracy McGrady added 16 off the bench on 7-of-14 shooting as the Raptors shot just under 49 percent (35-of-72) overall and sank 25-of-30 free throws.

"We have to keep ourselves playing aggressive and out of foul trouble," New York coach Jeff Van Gundy said. "Their perimeter players have just really hurt us badly, so I have to give them credit the next time we play them."

Toronto shot 61 percent (11-of-18) and led 26-22 after one quarter. Ewing scored the first four points in a 9-0 run to close the second quarter as New York grabbed a 47-42 lead.

Sprewell scored 19 points but was only 6-of-17 from the field. Houston added 15 as the Knicks shot 44 percent (31-of-70) but just 3-of-13 from 3-point range. Playing without Marcus Camby, the Knicks' reserves scored a total of 10 points.
