Game Story

INDIANAPOLIS (Ticker) -- Jalen Rose scored 22 points and Austin Croshere added 17 off the bench as the Indiana Pacers used a balanced offense and overcame a strong effort by rookie Elton Brand for a 100-83 victory over the Chicago Bulls.

Reserve Derrick McKey had eight of his 14 points and eight of his 10 rebounds in the fourth quarter, when Indiana's depth and experience wore down Chicago. Indiana shot 52 percent (11-of-21) and outscored Chicago, 29-18, in the period.

"It was a tough battle and our second unit picked us up tonight," said Indiana coach Larry Bird. "The last couple of years it seems that when the starters don't have it going, the subs come in and puck it up, then the starters are OK. But tonight they never got it going, so I left the second unit in. Our second unit definitely picked us up tonight."

The Pacers won their 21st straight home game and improved to 12-0 when facing a team they lost to in the previous meeting. Indiana had six players in double figures with Mark Jackson recording 13 points and seven assists, Reggie Miller scoring 12 points and Rik Smits adding 11.

Indiana has not lost at home since a 107-99 setback to Detroit and November 25 and is 3 1/2 games ahead of Miami and New Yor for the best record in the Eastern Conference.

"We did have a tough time getting into the flow tonight," Rose said. "But we know we have to keep working and trying to find a way to win. We feel good about where we are in the standings now, but there are a lot of games left. We must continue to work, be better on the road and find ways to win."

Brand scored a career-high 38 points for Chicago, which upset Indiana, 83-82, on January 24. The top overall pick in the draft, Brand made 18-of-23 shots and is averaging 25.5 points in four games since Toni Kukoc was dealt to Philadelphia in a three-team trade.

"I just wanted to go hard, establish myself right away and that's what I did," Brand said. "I think I'm where I wanted to midpoint of the season. I'm right here where I wanted to be, I wanted to work hard. I don't feel I've peaked yet, so I want to keep getting better and better."

"Elton Brand is a very tough ballplayer," said McKey, known as a defensive specialist. "Their offense is geared to him and has many variations. It helped by watching him the first quarter and having somewhat of an idea which way he goes and any mannerisms he may have. I go out and play whomever I'm told to play."

John Starks, acquired in the Kukoc deal, added 11 points and was Chicago's only other scorer in double figures. The Bulls shot just 22 percent (4-of-18) from 3-point range and fell to 1-20 when allowing the opponent to score at least 100 points.

In the first half, Brand scored 17 points on 8-of-11 shooting to keep the Bulls within 45-44.

Chicago had its final lead at 63-61 when Dickey Simpkins had a three-point play with 2:31 to go in the third quarter. Croshere made a layup and Rose sank two free throws to put Indiana ahead before Brand made a short jumper to tie the score, 65-65, with 1:42 remaining. Rose responded with two free throws to trigger a 10-0 run that carried over into the fourth period.

Sam Perkins capped the run with a layup to give the Pacers a 75-65 advantage. Chicago closed to 77-72 on Brand's 15-footer with 7:13 to play but came no closer. Croshere answered with consecutive jumpers, giving Indiana an 81-72 cushion with 6:12 left.

Brand stayed hot in the fourth, hitting 5-of-6 shots. But his teammates shot just 25 percent (3-of-12).
