Game Story

WASHINGTON (Ticker) -- Clifford Robinson scored 10 of his 11 points in the first quarter as the Phoenix Suns grabbed an early lead and held on for their season-high eighth straight win, a 92-83 victory over the Washington Wizards.

Tom Gugliotta scored 20 points and Rodney Rogers added 16 off the bench for the Suns, whose streak is their longest since a 10-game run from March 17-April 15, 1998. Phoenix won seven in a row from November 17-December 1.

Robinson's quick start helped the Suns race to a 35-19 lead after one period. Phoenix led for the last 46 minutes and by at least six points throughout the second half.

"We have gone through some tough things this season with injuries and coaching changes," Robinson said. "We weathered the storm pretty well and now we have everyone back, now we have to do what the coaching staff asks of us. And we are having fun."

"He is much more mature, even in the three years I have been here," Suns coach Scott Skiles said. "He's been one of the leaders of the team and he's become very important for us. He's a really good team player and a good influence in the locker room."

Mitch Richmond scored 19 points for the Wizards, who have lost eight of their last nine games. Washington also has lost 20 of its last 22 meetings with Phoenix dating to the 1987-88 season.

Wizards interim coach Darrell Walker fell to 2-9 since replacing Gar Heard and afterward let his team know he was upset with the outing.

"I could tell he was," Wizards center Jahidi White said. "He had good reason to be. The team's performance ... he's out there coaching and giving his best out there, drawing those great plays and it's not on him, the pressure is all on us ... The responsibility lies on us right now."

Phoenix took the lead for good at 6-4 on two free throws by Gugliotta just two minutes into the game. That started a 19-6 burst that featured two 3-pointers and a short jumper by Robinson. A basket by Penny Hardaway gave the Suns a 23-10 lead with 4:40 remaining.

"We knocked down so many hard shots in the first quarter on them and it was hard for them to get back," Hardaway said. "You have to come in against home teams and knock down shots."

Sparked by reserve guard Chris Whitney, the Wizards closed to 54-47 at halftime. But rookie Shawn Marion, Jason Kidd and Gugliotta opened the third quarter with baskets to quickly rebuild Phoenix's lead to 13 points.

A 3-pointer by Richmond closed the period and moved the Wizards within 73-65. Whitney's basket opened the scoring in the final period and Juwan Howard's short jumper kept Washington within 77-69 with 9:34 remaining.

But the Wizards went scoreless over the next 3:16. The Suns pushed the lead to 14 points before Howard ended the drought at 83-71 with 6:18 to play. Gugliotta hit a jumper and Rogers drained a 3-pointer for an 88-71 advantage with 4:11 left. The Wizards got no closer than nine points thereafter.

"We've been a little spoiled because we've been winning by big margins, but they came back and made us play at the end," said Gugliotta.

Gugliotta, who began his career with Washington, made 6-of-10 shots. The 6-10 forward filled in at center for flu-ridden Luc Longley.

"On different nights a lot of different guys get good opportunities. Tonight was mine," Gugliotta said. "I caught a lot of passes and was in good position. It's a credit to the offense because we were moving the ball well."

Hardaway scored 13 points and Marion 12 for the Suns, who shot 46 percent (34-of-74) from the field and overcame 18 turnovers. Kidd handed out nine assists.

Whitney scored 13 points and Howard added 12 for the Wizards, who shot just 38 percent (32-of-84) and held a 45-40 rebounding edge. White pulled down 10 rebounds.
