Game Story

LOS ANGELES (Ticker) -- "The Streak II" continues for the Los Angeles Lakers.

Shaquille O'Neal had 28 points, 15 rebounds and six assists as the Lakers cruised to their 10th straight win, a 109-96 triumph over the struggling Boston Celtics.

The Lakers had an NBA season-high 16-game run from December 11-January 12, but looked human in dropping six of nine before their current streak. Los Angeles has not lost since 105-81 setback at San Antonio on February 1 and pulled into a tie with Pacific Division rival Portland for the NBA's top record at 44-11.

"The streak! We're doing the same thing we did last time," Los Angeles forward Kobe Bryant said. "Just taking it one game at a time. We are playing better each game. That was one of our goals this season. Not just play to win but play to improve. We're not thinking about (the streak), we're just going to keep getting better anyway."

"I think that right now we are a stronger team right now than we were a couple of months ago and that's important," Lakers coach Phil Jackson said.

Glen Rice scored 20 points on 7-of-12 shooting for the Lakers, who have two separate winning streaks of 10 or more games for the first time since the 1987-88 campaign, when they also had a 16-game run before winning 11 in a row. Los Angeles won its last NBA title that season.

O'Neal, who had 34 points and 20 rebounds in a 99-90 victory at Boston on December 20, made 13-of-20 shots before resting for most of the fourth quarter.

"We've just come home from an unbelievable (6-0) road trip," O'Neal said. "We've gotten off to a good start the second half of the season. We just have to keep it up. We were able to get a 10- to 15-point lead and keep it. I was very tired tonight. That was the ugliest 28 points I ever had.

"If we can just keep getting better into the playoffs, we're going to be dangerous."

Antoine Walker scored 25 points for Boston, which has lost four of five and slipped to 6-23 away from the FleetCenter.

Bryant had 17 points, six rebounds and five assists for Los Angeles, which shot 53 percent (41-of-77), held a 47-38 edge on the boards and scored 19 points off turnovers.

The Lakers boast a 20-2 mark against Eastern Conference foes and are 34-1 when outrebounding their opponents. They also handed out a season-high 35 assists.

"We were pinpointing our passes," Bryant said. "We were prepared for their press. It kind of felt like a football game."

Travis Knight scored a season-high nine points in extended garbage time for Los Angeles, which outscored Boston, 64-28, in the paint and held a 30-10 advantage in fast-break points.

O'Neal put the Lakers ahead to stay just over two minutes into play when he buried a five-foot hook to make it 6-4. Bryant followed with a driving layup and Los Angeles was off and running, building a 30-17 lead after one quarter.

Paul Pierce scored 19 points, Vitaly Potapenko 14 and Kenny Anderson and Tony Battie added 12 apiece for Boston, which shot 42 percent (37-of-89), including a 2-of-10 performance from 3-point range.

"We wanted to at least win four (games)," Pierce said of the Celtics' 2-6 road trip. "We've got to pick it up this next month because I don't think we're really out of it yet. We're just going to go out and keep playing hard."

O'Neal slammed and made a layup to push the lead to 38-19 less than three minutes into the second quarter and Boston never got within single digits again.

"They were kind to us, it could have been a lot worse," Celtics coach Rick Pitino said. "We got frequent substitutions, they helped us stay respectable. They are much better than us and they showed their class tonight by doing small things."
