Game Story

TORONTO (Ticker) -- Yeah, that's the ticket.

Spurred by a negative reference toward their team printed on the tickets, the Minnesota Timberwolves came out flying and roared to a 107-85 victory over the Toronto Raptors.

Fans entering the Air Canada Centre held tickets that read, "The Toronto Raptors are undefeated at home against Kevin Garnett and the Minnesota Timberwolves." Garnett and his teammates noticed it when given their allotment and decided to do something about it.

"We saw the ticket before the game," Timberwolves guard Terrell Brandon said. "It's not something you usually see so we took offense to that and next time we come, they can't say that."

Garnett had 28 points, 12 rebounds and eight assists for the Wolves, who shot a blistering 76 percent from the field in the first quarter and stayed hot throughout for their first win in five all-time trips to Toronto.

"The whole thing with the tickets and that we didn't get much rest seemed to give us extra focus tonight," Garnett said. "We were very motivated and the guys were fired up."

"That's something we didn't know about but they can leave that out next time," Raptors center Antonio Davis said. "It still is no excuse for the way we played tonight."

Guards Brandon and Malik Sealy scored 18 points apiece for Minnesota, which shot 53 percent (43-of-81) and improved to 13-13 on the road.

Vince Carter scored 23 points and Tracy McGrady added 20 and nine rebounds for the Raptors, who have lost four of five overall and three in a row at home. Toronto shot 44 percent (30-of-68) and were outrebounded, 40-33.

"We were a little out of sync tonight but when a team shoots so well there aren't many rebounds to grab," Raptors coach Butch Carter said. "We need a consistent effort on the defensive end and until we realize it we will be inconsistent. We're on a bit of a rollercoaster. Our two young players have given us a high profile, so now other teams get up to play us."

Minnesota made 16-of-21 shots in the opening period as Garnett was 5-of-6, Sealy 4-of-5 and Brandon 3-of-3. However, it did not take control until Garnett scored six points in a 17-7 run capped by Anthony Peeler's 3-pointer that made it 35-25 with 19 seconds left.

Sealy's 21-footer triggered an 8-3 spurt that closed the first half and gave the Wolves a 59-46 lead. They shot 59 percent (27-of-46) in the first half and the intermission did nothing to cool them off.

Rookie Wally Szczerbiak scored, Garnett had two free throws and a hoop and Radoslav Nesterovic threw in a hook for a 67-46 bulge with 7:58 left in the third quarter. Garnett scored four more in a 10-0 burst that pushed the advantage to 83-56 with 1:59 to go in the period.

"He got a lot of points tonight off of passes," Minnesota coach Flip Saunders said. "We let other people on this team initiate our offense."

"I tried to get my teammates involved and guys responded," Garnett said. "I've been analyzing my game and I've been trying to share the ball better and be more aggressive myself. Tonight, guys were knocking them down on the wings and we played exceptionally good defense."

The Raptors never got closer than 16 points in the final period, when both Carters picked up technical fouls.

"It hurts to lose a game like that," Vince Carter said. "We had trouble countering them on defense. They were hitting all their shots tonight but we have to play through that. We just didn't play as a team tonight."

Joe Smith scored 16 points and Peeler added 11 for Minnesota, which made 15-of-17 free throws. Brandon handed out eight assists. Doug Christie scored 11 points for the Raptors.
