Game Story

WASHINGTON (Ticker) -- Tim Hardaway scored seven of his 23 points during a crucial fourth-quarter run and handed out nine assists as the Miami Heat continued their dominance of the Washington Wizards with a 98-88 victory.

Hardaway came out of a recent shooting slump, hitting 7-of-11 shots, including 4-of-6 from 3-point range, to lead the Heat to their seventh straight victory over the reeling Wizards. The veteran point guard came in averaging only 7.7 points on 23 percent shooting in his last three games.

Hardaway sparked a 10-2 run with a 19-foot jumper which gave Miami an 88-86 edge with 4:18 left. After Dan Majerle extended the lead with a 3-pointer, Hardaway was fouled by Rod Strickland attempting one of his own and hit all three free throws to give Miami a 94-86 cushion at the 3:11 mark.

Jahidi White interrupted the run with a dunk but Hardaway answered with a driving layup for a 96-88 lead with 1:43 to play. P.J. Brown capped the scoring with a layup in the final minute.

"Down the stretch, we made the plays," Hardaway said. "I was getting free and making the shot. It doesn't matter to me if it was the big shot, I just wanted it to go in."

"Tim was vintage tonight," Heat coach Pat Riley said. "He's just getting stronger every game."

Washington's Tracy Murray had a big game off the bench with 20 points, making 4-of-6 from behind the arc. But it wasn't enough to prevent the Wizards from losing for the ninth time in 10 games.

Alonzo Mourning rebounded from a nine-point performance against Cleveland on Thursday, scoring 28 points, including 12-of-13 free throws. The 6-10 center was forced to leave the game late in the third quarter after receiving a blow to his broken nose fighting for a rebound. Mourning bled profusely for several minutes before returning to the game three minutes into the final quarter, when he had six points.

"It was one of the best overall games he's had all year," Riley said. "He was very, very strong tonight."

"We struggled at times tonight," Mourning said. "We couldn't put them away until the very end. We all stepped it up defensively in the fourth, and that was the difference."

Washington led 54-52 at halftime despite shooting only 39 percent (18-of-46). But the Wizards were on target from 3-point range (4-of-7) and converted 14-of-15 free throws to overcome their shooting woes.

The Heat opened the second half with a 17-6 run, with Hardaway scoring six points and Mourning adding four, to take a 69-60 lead with 6:37 left. Washington responded with a 14-4 spurt late in the period to take a one-point lead in the final minute before Clarence Weatherspoon's two free throws gave Miami a 75-74 lead entering the fourth quarter.

"I think we just ran out of steam towards the end," Strickland said. "They made the plays and we didn't."

Jamal Mashburn collected 15 points and Clarence Weatherspoon had 12, his fourth straight game in double figures. The Heat, who improved to 15-14 on the road, shot 46 percent from the field (34-of-74) and hit 24-of-28 free throws.

Juwan Howard scored only two of his 17 points in the second half and grabbed 11 rebounds for the Wizards, who shot 39 percent (32-of-82) despite nailing 7-of-11 from behind the arc and held a 44-31 rebounding advantage.

Washington dropped to 2-10 under interim coach Darrell Walker and has lost 20 of its last 25 games.

"We played very, very well all game except for the last four minutes,", Wizards guard Mitch Richmond said. "Again, the typical Miami-Washington game -- we had opportunities to win, we just kept making mistakes down the stretch. That cost us."
