Game Story

CHARLOTTE, North Carolina (Ticker) -- Gary Payton had 32 points, nine rebounds and eight assists and made a crucial steal in the waning seconds to lead the Seattle Supersonics to an 84-81 victory over the Charlotte Hornets.

Payton scored nine points in the decisive fourth quarter, all on 3-pointers, and secured the victory with a heads-up defensive play. The Sonics point guard was 12-of-21 from the floor, including 5-of-11 from behind the arc.

Leading 83-81 with five seconds left, Seattle's Brent Barry had a chance to ice the game with two free throws. But he managed only 1-of-2, giving Charlotte a chance to send the game to overtime.

With the Hornets out of timeouts, Anthony Mason attempted a long inbounds pass from under his own basket, but Payton intercepted it at half-court and dribbled out the clock.

"Our shots started falling once we got adjusted to things," Payton said. "They were double-teaming Vin (Baker) so we started kicking the ball outside. We weren't playing well early, but we stayed in the game. I have to stay on the young guys because they will drift."

The Sonics improved to 17-13 on the road, despite shooting a dismal 46 percent (12-of-26) from the foul line and getting outrebounded 51-41.

"I don't know what the free throw stats were in the fourth quarter but it wasn't pretty," Seattle coach Paul Westphal said. "It was amazing that we were able to hang on and win the game. We stepped up and played good defense in the fourth quarter."

Payton's first 3-pointer of the fourth quarter put the Sonics ahead 68-65 with 9:38 remaining. After Charlotte tied the game on a technical free throw by Eddie Jones and a layup by Elden Campbell, Payton put Seattle ahead for good, 71-68, with another bomb from the right side at the 8:49 mark.

Mason's two free throws cut the deficit to 75-74 with 5:27 left but Rashard Lewis answered with a layup, Barry followed with a 14-footer and Payton added another 3-pointer, pushing the lead to 85-74 with 2:35 to play.

Charlotte drew within five on a 3-pointer by Jones and after Baker hit one of two from the line, David Wesley and Elden Campbell followed with baskets to bring Charlotte within 83-81 with 6.2 seconds remaining.

Derrick Coleman left the game with 3:52 left in the third quarter with a sprained right ankle and did not return. The Hornets power forward finished with 14 points and eight rebounds in 27 minutes.

"Right now, we have a lack of talent," Charlotte coach Paul Silas said. "Derrick went down and Brad Miller is out. Derrick has been good for 20 points and 10 rebounds. Normally he would have taken charge and we could have counted on him down the stretch."

Eddie Jones had 23 points for Charlotte, which has dropped three straight overall and four of its last six at home.

"We're just not putting the ball in the hoop," said Jones, who made only 9-of-23 shots. "We're getting good looks but we just can't make shots. We have to push the ball up the court. That is the key for us. I don't think we can take anything positive away from this game."

Jones had 11 first-quarter points as Charlotte led 27-21 after 12 minutes. The Hornets opened a 10-point lead in the second quarter but Seattle cut the deficit to 47-42 at halftime. Charlotte took a 65-64 lead into the final period.

Campbell collected 14 points and 10 rebounds and Mason had 12 and 13 for the Hornets, which shot only 37 percent from the floor (32-of-87), including 4-of-16 from 3-point range.

"I thought we did some things good and some things poorly," Silas said. "We didn't make enough shots. You can't shoot 36 percent and win games. Defense wasn't our problem. We can't put the ball in the hoop."
