Game Story

LOS ANGELES (Ticker) -- Just when you thought the Los Angeles Clippers could not sink any lower this season -- they did.

Cuttino Mobley scored 21 points and grabbed eight rebounds as the Houston Rockets held the Clippers to a team record-low 27 percent shooting in an easy 96-77 triumph at the Staples Center.

"We had good looks tonight," Clippers coach Jim Todd said. "We looked at our stats. We took great shots in the paint, but we were just flat tonight. We shot just 25 percent and you won't beat anyone in this league doing that."

The loss ended any chance for Los Angeles to record back-to-back victories for the first time since winning three straight from December 22-26. It is a woeful 9-17 at home and has won just twice in its last seven contests at the Staples Center.

Mobley, Matt Bullard, and Carlos Rogers combined to score 48 points off the bench for Houston, which has won 28 of the last 31 meetings meetings between the teams, including all three this season.

Houston also was without future Hall-of-Famer Hakeem Olajuwon, who was sent home with a virus that left him dehydrated.

The Rockets seized control at the start of the second quarter. A 20-8 burst, capped by Mobley's 3-pointer with 5:23 remaining, left Houston with a 42-23 lead. After rookie Steve Francis converted a driving layup midway through the third quarter, the Rockets had their biggest lead, 69-44.

Rookie Lamar Odom scored 20 points and pulled down 11 rebounds for the Clippers, who held the Rockets to only 38 percent shooting from the field. Odom did not start, but played despite suffering from the flu and a sore shoulder.

"The flu is alright," Odom said. "(The doctor) thinks (the shoulder joint) keeps jumping in and out of the socket. I didn't start because I went to the doctor and missed the shoot around."

Mobley, who posted a career-high 29 points in a 101-85 defeat to the Los Angeles Lakers on Sunday, hit on 7-of-18 shooting including 3-of-7 from behind the arc.

"(Mobley) has been phenomenal," Rockets coach Rudy Tomjanovich said. "We've been talking about that sixth man, and those kind of guys are invaluable. Cuttino (Mobley) could start on a lot of teams in the NBA."

The Clippers never led in the contest and only tied the game 2-2 barely two minutes into the first quarter. Michael Olowokandi pulled Los Angeles within one point with 6:33 remaining in the quarter, but the Rockets went up by nine after Rogers tipped in Mobley's miss for a 22-13 lead.

After Houston took its biggest lead in the third quarter, Los Angeles went on an impressive 18-5 burst to pull within 74-62 at the end of the period.

"Tonight we had a lot of open shots and we just couldn't hit them," Clippers forward Tyrone Nesby said. "I thought we played some good defense at times. Guys are tired and we've been on the road. No one really has got their legs out there."

However, the Rockets recorded nine of the first 11 points to start the final period. After Mobley's driving layup with 8:11 remaining, Houston led 83-64, putting to bed any chance of a dramatic Los Angeles comeback.

"It's always easy to play a team that shoots a lot from the outside," said Mobley about the 97 shots Los Angeles took. "Coach told us to give them the jump shot. They didn't hit them very much, which made things easy."

Derek Anderson added 12 points and collected 12 rebounds for the Clippers, who shot 91 percent from the free throw line (21-of-23).

For the second game in a row, Francis struggled from the field. He is a miserable 4-of-23 shooting for 16 points and has committed 11 turnovers in that span.
