Game Story

LOS ANGELES (Ticker) -- It took almost three quarters to make sure there would be no letdown for the Los Angeles Lakers.

The Lakers drilled four 3-pointers in a closing third-quarter run as they picked up their 13th straight win overall and 17th in 18 meetings against the Vancouver Grizzlies, 103-91.

Brian Shaw, Robert Horry, Rick Fox and Kobe Bryant each connected from beyond the arc during a 12-3 run to give Los Angeles a 77-69 lead after three quarters. The win came 24 hours after it topped Portland to gain sole possession of the league's best record.

"Everybody's legs were heavy. It was a long flight home," Bryant said. "We had to fight through it. It was a growing point how we stepped up to the challenge. We were a step slow and fought through it."

Bryant scored 27 points and Shaquille O'Neal added 25 and 17 rebounds for the Lakers, who improved to 10-0 at home all-time against the Grizzlies and have won seven straight overall at the Staples Center.

"We did like we usually do and played down to the talent of our competitor," O'Neal said. "But we gutted it out and got the win. We hit some big shots when it counted."

Dennis Scott made three free throws with 1:51 left, closing an 11-4 run that pulled Vancouver within 97-91, the closest it got in the fourth quarter. But Bryant drilled a jumper and Shareef-Abdur Rahim missed in the lane, sealing the Grizzlies' fate.

O'Neal shot 11-of-17 from the field and Bryant 9-of-22 to help Los Angeles shoot 45 percent (39-of-87) from the floor.

"We had to measure it out and find a way to win at some point in the game because (the Grizzlies) have such a young team with a lot of energy," Lakers coach Phil Jackson said. "They did a good job during the first three quarters."

The three-game homestand gets tougher for Los Angeles, which hosts division-leaders Indiana on Friday and Miami on Sunday.

Abdur-Rahim had 18 points and 11 rebounds, Michael Dickerson scored 18 points and Othella Harrington 17 for Vancouver, which has dropped five of eight. Grant Long scored 13 points and Mike Bibby chipped in 12 as the Grizzlies shot 45 percent (34-of-76) from the floor.

"Throughout the course of the game, the strategy we employed was good," Grizzlies interim coach Lionel Hollins said. "We were in the lead and we just could have executed a little better offensively. It was just a game where they just took control at the end of the third quarter."

Vancouver looks to salvage the final game of its three-game road trip Friday when it visits Portland.

"I think we played good, but just experiences some lapses here and there," Bibby said. "I think we gave it a good effort, but we have to worry about Portland next."

O'Neal poured in 16 points and Bryant added eight as the Lakers led, 48-47, at halftime. Long paced the Grizzlies off the bench with 11.
