Game Story

PHOENIX (Ticker) -- Rodney Rogers scored 14 of his 29 points in the decisive fourth quarter, leading the Phoenix Suns to their season-high 10th straight home victory, 110-96, over the Dallas Mavericks.

A leading candidate for the Sixth Man Award, Rogers hit 10-of-13 shots, including 3-of-4 from behind the arc, and grabbed 10 rebounds. Phoenix's home streak is its longest single-season run since it won 13 in a row in the 1994-95 season.

Dallas, which trailed by 16 points midway through the third quarter, cut the deficit to 91-88 with 5:38 to play on a layup by Cedric Ceballos, who scored 33 points. But Rogers capped a 9-0 run with an emphatic slam, pushing the lead to 100-88 with 3:11 left.

Rogers hit a 3-pointer after Micheal Finley made consecutive layups and added another after Finley's 14-foot jumper, giving the Suns a commanding 106-94 advantage with 1:06 left.

(Jason) Kidd and Penny (Hardaway) didn't really have it going tonight so me and (Tom Gugliotta) had to pick it up," Rogers said. "At first, I didn't try to shoot a lot of jump shots -- I tried to get it going by going to the basket. Then I took some shots outside and it came for me.

"Just to have your teammates feel comfortable with you and have that kind of confidence that they give you the ball late in the game is something I'm not used to," Rogers added. I'm not used to winning like this, I'm having a ball. If they keep finding me, I'll keep shooting."

Ceballos and Finley, who both started their careers in Phoenix, scored 20 of the Mavericks' 22 fourth-quarter points but could not prevent Dallas from losing its third straight game. Ceballos made 13-of-19 shots and Finley scored 22 points.

"Cedric seemed to be on a real roll out there," said assistant Donn Nelson, who coached his second straight game in the absence of his father Don, who has the flu. "We need him to score and rebound like that.

"It was good to see us come back and make it a real competitive game but we're real disappointed in that locker room," Nelson added. We're tired of coming close and we to put some of these games home."

Dennis Rodman had 19 rebounds along with six points but once again found himself in the center of controversy. The troubled forward received a technical foul late in the first quarter after throwing the ball several rows into the stands. The Mavs dropped to 3-7 with Rodman in the lineup.

"I don't give a damn who they put out there because (the referees) are all the same," Rodman said. "They call the game as they see it but sometimes they need to wear some damn glasses or get a second opinion. But a game's a game, we just need to move on."

Rodman was just warming up.

"It's just to entertain the fans, that's all," said Rodman, explaining why he threw the ball into the stands. I was trying to have some fun with the fans, not a big deal, but you can't even do that any more. David Stern's going to put a stick up all these guys' (butts) and for some reason they can't get it out."

Cliff Robinson, who scored 27 points, hit four 3-pointers and scored 15 first-quarter points as the Suns built a 31-20 lead. Dallas shot only 28 percent (7-of-25) in the period, with Shawn Bradley making only 1-of-8.

"We knew thay play really well from behind -- most of the time, that's where their coming from," Robinson said. "They play more loose under those circumstances. We knew we would have to play 48 minutes and not sleep on those guys."

The Mavs reversed the trend in the second quarter, hitting 13 of their first 16 shots to forge a 50-50 tie with 3:36 remaining. Phoenix was able to weather the storm by nailing 9-of-16 shots over the same period. But Dallas went cold, missing its final six attempts while the Suns used a 10-2 spurt to take a 60-52 lead into halftime.

Phoenix took an 84-74 lead into the fourth quarter.

Gugliotta collected 18 points and 14 rebounds and Kidd added 13 and 14 assists for the Suns, who shot 46 percent (43-of-93) and made 15-of-19 free throws.

"That's was a good win because that team gives us a lot of trouble, Suns coach Scott Skiles said. "Their biggest strength is our biggest weakness. They have good 1-on-1 players and our weakness in a lot of cases is just defending people 1-on-1."

Dirk Nowitzki scored 11 points and Erick Strickland added 10 for Dallas, which shot 44 percent (37-of-75) and committed 18 turnovers.
