Game Story

MILWAUKEE (Ticker) -- Once Kevin Garnett made his return to the court, the Minnesota Timberwolves figured everything would be all right.

Garnett returned from the locker room with an ankle sprain to score 15 of his 21 points in the second half as the Timberwolves won for the sixth time in seven contests, an 91-84 triumph over the Milwaukee Bucks.

Garnett left early in the third quarter with a sprained left ankle as he came down on the foot of Milwaukee's Sam Cassell. Down the stretch, he provided a spark as he scored eight straight points for the Timberwolves, who opened an 85-78 lead with 61 seconds left.

"I didn't really know what was going on when I went out," Garnett said. "I looked up and saw (Ray Allen's) dunk and said `Tape me up.' I'm fine.' Terrell (Brandon) really picked us up."

Minnesota made all 20 of its free throws, setting a franchise record. It converted all 14 from the line against Sacramento on March 21, 1990.

Brandon scored 22 points against his former team and rookie Wally Szczerbiak added 19 for the Timberwolves, who trail Seattle by one game for sixth place in the Western Conference. Those teams battle at the Target Center on Sunday.

"Wally is playing better, a lot of guys are playing better the last couple of weeks," Wolves coach Flip Saunders said. "We've gotten better. I feel like we can play longer without (Garnett) now. Then he comes back and plays into the flow."

"We just worry about the present," Garnett added. "We're now just ready for the Sonics. When we think ahead, you are vulnerable and slip."

Joe Smith grabbed 13 rebounds and Garnett pulled down 10 for the Timberwolves, who held a 44-35 advantage on the glass and have won four straight visits to the Bradley Center.

"You can't take anything away from Minnesota," Cassell said. "Kevin Garnett is one of the best players in the whole league. Kevin draws the double and opens up the whole offense."

After Garnett left, Brandon helped break open a close game. He scored 11 points in the third quarter, including seven during an 11-0 spurt that gave Minnesota a 61-52 lead with 5:15 remaining. Garnett made his return with 3:36 left and the Wolves holding a 66-56 advantage.

Allen scored 28 points and Glenn Robinson added 21 for the Bucks, who have dropped seven of their last eight overall and eight of their last nine at home.

"I thought the key factor was when (Garnett) wasn't in the game," Bucks coach George Karl said. "We let them get a lead without him. Giving them two or three extra possessions in the last five minutes was probably the difference in the game."

Milwaukee shot 41 percent (34-of-83), including just 2-of-13 from 3-point range. The Bucks saw their lead over Orlando reduced to one-half game in the race for the final playoff berth in the Eastern Conference.

Referee Blane Reichelt suffered a sprained ankle with 8:49 to go in the opening quarter and did not return.
