Game Story

CHARLOTTE, North Carolina (Ticker) -- David Wesley made a key 3-pointer and two free throws as the Charlotte Hornets scored the final 10 points in a 100-94 victory over the Chicago Bulls.

Wesley's 3-pointer put the Hornets ahead for good, 95-94, with 1:36 remaining. After a steal by Anthony Mason, Wesley made two foul shots 21 seconds later for a three-point cushion.

Wesley, who also had 11 assists, stole the ball from rookie Elton Brand to set up Mason's basket for a 99-94 lead with 17 seconds to play. After another turnover by the Bulls, Eddie Jones made one of two foul shots for the final margin.

"A win is a win," Wesley said. "We're not going to look back at how much we won by. We got stops and had to put the ball in. We can't say that we'll get them next time. Every game counts. We've been playing really good defense, especially the last 10 games. We just haven't hit our shots. Defensively we got it done again."

Derrick Coleman had 26 points and seven rebounds before he was ejected after receiving his second technical with 6:48 to go. Jones added 23 for Charlotte, which won for only the second time in seven games.

"We won the game. That's all that matters," Coleman said. "It's over and done with. Que sera, sera. They have some big guys and I think Elton Brand is leading the league in offensive rebounds. When you have guys driving and you help them, you can control the boards. We never underestimate our opponent. They played well througout the game. Any win is a good win no matter what the score."

Brand, the top overall pick in the draft and a leading candidate for Rookie of the Year honors, had 24 points and 11 rebounds to lead Chicago. Fred Hoiberg added 20 points and nine boards and Chris Carr scored 17 off the bench for the Bulls. Hoiberg made 8-of-13 shots, including 3-of-5 from behind the arc, in 42 minutes.

"My legs feel good," Hoiberg said. "I'm sure I'll feel it tomorrow. I was just running on adrenaline. We fought really hard, but just didn't have any baskets down the stretch. We have to take the positives out of this game. If you stay negative all the time the season is going to be long."

Chicago outrebounded the Hornets, 45-33, but suffered its eighth straight loss. The Bulls did not score after Hoiberg made a 3-pointer for a 94-90 lead with 3:59 to go. Chicago shot 48 percent (36-of-75), but just 20 percent (3-of-15) in the fourth period.

Eddie Robinson followed with a 15-footer to pull Charlotte within 94-92 with 2:56 to play. Robinson had eight points and five rebounds off the bench.

Coleman scored 18 points in the first half when the Hornets held a 50-49 edge.

Charlotte built the lead to 63-58 on Wesley's layup with 6:01 left in the third. Chicago used a 12-5 burst to take a 72-68 advantage when Matt Maloney made a 3-pointer with 1:31 to go.

The Hornets took a 74-73 lead into the fourth and led by as much as 87-81 when Carr sank two free throws with six and a half minutes to play.
