Game Story

LOS ANGELES (Ticker) -- It was Shaq's birthday and he could score if he wanted.

Shaquille O'Neal did just that, scoring a career-high 61 points as the Los Angeles Lakers matched their NBA season-high 16-game winning streak with a 123-103 victory over the Los Angeles Clippers.

On his 28th birthday, the 7-2 O'Neal became the 16th NBA player to score 60 points and the first since David Robinson of San Antonio had 71 on April 24, 1994, also against the Clippers. In that game, Robinson's teammates force-fed him the ball so he could beat out O'Neal for the scoring title.

Other Lakers to score 60 include Elgin Baylor, who scored 71 at New York on November 15, 1960; Wilt Chamberlain, who had 66 against Phoenix on February 9, 1969; Jerry West, who scored 63 against New York on January 17, 1962; and George Mikan, who had 61 against Rochester on January 20, 1952, when the franchise was in Minneapolis.

Others to score at least 60 points in an NBA game are David Thompson, Michael Jordan, Pete Maravich, Rick Barry, Joe Fulks, George Gervin, Bernard King, Larry Bird, Tom Chambers and Karl Malone. O'Neal joins Robinson and Malone as the only active players to reach the milestone.

"I'm going to put 28 candles on my cake, not 61," said O'Neal, who joined Chamberlain and Baylor as the only players to have at least 60 points and 20 rebounds in a game. "I'm on a mission. My shots were falling. I felt pretty good and the crowd was giving me a lot of energy. I just want to continue the streak."

O'Neal eclipsed his career high of 53 points by one point with a dunk with 5:25 remaining and topped the 60-point mark with another slam with 3:24 left. On the next trip down the floor, the 7-footer played point guard and set up a perfect alley-oop pass for Kobe Bryant, whose dunk gave the Lakers their largest lead of the quarter, 117-97.

"My teammates were yelling, `We're going to get you 50 -- and then 60,'" O'Neal said. "I think the coach told my teammates to let me go out and do my thing."

The largest crowd (20,385) to attend an NBA game in Southern California cheered every point by O'Neal, who scored 15 in a row before leaving with 2:33 remaining to chants of "MVP, MVP."

"We realized that when a guy has it going like he did tonight, that it's something special," Lakers forward Glen Rice said. "Since it was his birthday today, it's very special. Even the Clippers fans started pulling for him to get as many points as he could. The guys on the floor were looking very hard to get him the ball. I'm pretty sure, deep down inside, even the Clippers players enjoyed it."

Simply overpowering Michael Olowokandi, Anthony Avent and Pete Chilcutt, O'Neal shot 24-of-35 from the floor and 13-of-22 from the free-throw line as he shattered the league season high of 51 by Vince Carter of Toronto against Phoenix on February 27. He also grabbed 23 rebounds, his seventh game of 20 or more this season.

"They weren't doubling," the All-Star center said of the Clippers. "So I just tried to get in deep. It kind of surprised me that they didn't double me. It allowed me to showcase what I can do. We had fun tonight."

O'Neal's outburst raised his season average from 27.6 to 28.2 points per game. The 1995 scoring champion still trails Allen Iverson by 1.5 points per game for the league lead.

Bryant, who passed on a layup in order to feed O'Neal for his 61st point, scored 22 points and Rice added 16 for the Lakers, who also won 16 in a row from December 11-January 12.

"The one thing (O'Neal) said to us was, `Today is my birthday. Can I go out and do my thing today?'" Lakers guard Ron Harper said. "Everybody agreed. Let him do what he wanted to do. He came out here and got the job done. I couldn't go buy him anything because he already has everthing. So with little passes in to him, and little dunks -- his smiling. We showed our appreciation to him tonight."

The Lakers beat the Clippers for the 13th consecutive time. They have not lost to their city rivals dating to a 97-95 setback at the Great Western Forum on March 14, 1997 and completed their third straight series sweep of the Clippers.

Maurice Taylor had 25 points and 10 rebounds and Lamar Odom collected 17 and 11 for the Clippers, who have dropped 16 of their last 17 games and fell to a dismal 9-19 at home this season.

"We tried to do everything to slow him down but we just had a tough going against him," Clippers coach Jim Todd said. "We started to double-team him but he had good position down low. So then we started to foul him but he kept on making his free throws."

Derek Anderson scored 21 points for the Clippers but Olowokandi had just two after picking up three fouls in the first four minutes. Clippers center Keith Closs did not play due to back spasms while guard Troy Hudson sat out with a stomach virus.

Despite 26 points and 11 rebounds from O'Neal, the Lakers went into halftime with only a 56-55 lead.

Taylor's dunk gave the Clippers a 57-56 advantage with 11:30 left in the third quarter before the Lakers went on a 20-8 run, capped by Rice's two free throws with 5:17 to go in the quarter.

The Lakers shot 61 percent from the field (50-of-82) and held an 80-36 advantage in points in the paint while holding the Clippers to 41 percent shooting (38-of-93).

In the race for the best record in the NBA, the Lakers extended their lead to three games over the Portland Trail Blazers, who lost to the Toronto Raptors, 109-90.
