Game Story

SAN ANTONIO (Ticker) -- David Robinson had 25 points and 13 rebounds and rookie Derrick Dial had an impressive NBA debut, scoring seven of his nine points in the fourth quarter, as the San Antonio Spurs held off the New Jersey Nets, 106-104.

Tim Duncan had 17 points and 13 rebounds and Avery Johnson added 16 and 11 assists for San Antonio, which remained one half-game behind Phoenix for fourth place in the Western Conference.

"It was a great game," said San Antonio coach Gregg Popovich. "It was a good game by a lot of people. We needed this win after a couple of losses. It was good because New Jersey is one of those teams that gives us trouble. They are very quick."

Robinson scored 22 points in the first three quarters, helping the Spurs to an 84-81 lead. San Antonio did not lose the lead in the fourth although New Jersey closed within two points four times.

Keith Van Horn hit a five-footer to pull the Nets within 106-104 with 37 seconds remaining. After a bad pass by Jaren Jackson, the Nets had a chance to win but Marbury's jumper from behind the top of the key fell short at the buzzer.

"Coming out of huddle we just wanted to get a good shot off," Marbury said. "I thought it was the best shot we had. It felt good when I shot it. The last shot is not the reason we lost the game. Obviously if I had made it we would have won but that is not why we lost. We lost because when we were supposed to rotate on defense we gave up a lot of 3s. We made some crucial turnovers, I made three or four myself."

Marbury scored 34 points and Van Horn added 23 for New Jersey, which completed a 2-3 road trip.

After Robinson opened the fourth quarter with a pair of free throws 17 seconds in, Dial had a layup to give San Antonio an 88-81 lead with 11:12 remaining. Dial's 3-pointer with 8:21 to play provided the Spurs with their biggest lead of the game, 93-85.

"It was very nerve-wracking," said Dial. "I was very nervous. It all happened so fast. There wasn't any time to think. The guys just said go out and play."

"We had a few opportunities to get away from them," Robinson said. "But they made some big plays. Van Horn made some big shots. They don't go away. We have watched them on TV a lot and they play a lot of close games."

Van Horn made consecutive jumpers from the left side and Kittles converted two free throws to cut San Antonio's lead to 93-91 with 4:50 left. Jackson, who had 11 points, ended that surge with a 3-pointer 17 seconds later.

Marbury and Kerry Kittles each sank two free throws to pull the Nets within 100-98 with 2:47 remaining. Duncan and Van Horn traded baskets before Robinson made one free throw for a 103-100 margin with 2:03 left.

After Marbury missed, Jackson's 3-pointer made it 106-100 with 1:23 to play. Marbury responded with a short jumper 17 seconds later.

Marbury scored 16 points in the first half when the Nets held a 59-57 edge.

New Jersey held the lead throughout the third period until Robinson followed Jackson's 3-pointer with a dunk to put San Antonio ahead, 76-75, with 3:35 left.
