Game Story

MILWAUKEE (Ticker) -- Clinging to the last playoff spot in the Eastern Conference and struggling for the last month, the Milwaukee Bucks came out scorching and did not let up in a 111-78 rout of the Atlanta Hawks.

Milwaukee made nine of its first 10 shots from the field, racing to a 19-9 lead and never trailing thereafter in just its third win in 12 games. The Bucks extended the cushion to 28-14 when Sam Cassell maden eight-footer with 3:21 remaining in the first quarter. At that point, Milwaukee had made 13-of-19 shots and had six offensive rebounds on the misses.

"This was one of the best games we've played all year," said Milwaukee coach George Karl. "We played a complete game. We passed well, we ran. Defensively, we made good reads and reacted well to the ball."

Cassell had 21 points and 12 assists and Glenn Robinson added 17 points for Milwaukee, which shot 56 percent (48-of-86). Tim Thomas scored 16 points off the bench and Ray Allen added 13. Darvin Ham had season highs of 11 points and 13 rebounds to help the Bucks to a huge 51-21 advantage on the boards. Milwaukee also shot 61.5 percent (8-of-13) from 3-point range.

"We got killed on the boards," Atlanta coach Lenny Wilkens said. "They had 19 offensive rebounds. We were nonexistent. That is what set the tone, that is what killed us. We didn't box at out all."

No Milwaukee starter played more than 33 minutes and each substitute saw at least 10 minutes.

Milkwaukee swept four games from Atlanta for the first time in franchise history and remained one game ahead of the Orlando Magic for the eighth playoff spot in the East.

Reserve Lorenzen Wright scored 18 points on 8-of-10 shooting to lead the Hawks. Rookie Jason Terry had 12 points and 11 assists and Isaiah Rider came off the bench for the third straight game and scored 12 points.

Atlanta (23-35) has lost five of its last six and dropped five games behind Milwaukee (29-31).

"We need to get an attitude. They played with urgency like they were the ones trying to get to the playoffs," Terry said. "We simply weren't able to match that."

The Bucks held a 30-19 lead after the first quarter and opened the second with a 3-pointer by Thomas and a layup by Vinny Del Negro to make it 35-19 with 10:22 left.

Atlanta cut the deficit to 37-25 when Rider dunked with 7:59 to go. But Thomas responded with a 3-pointer and Robinson and Scott Williams followed with consecutive hooks to push the margin to 44-25 with just under six minutes left.

"We worked hard play for play," Williams said. "We were inspired by Darvin. He played extremely hard on offense and defense. We don't blow may teams out. We usually either win by a little or lose by a little. When you're struggling like we have been, it's a great catalyst."

Cassell hit a 3-pointer to cap a 9-2 burst and give Milwaukee a 71-40 bulge with 8:02 to play in the third quarter.

Milwaukee's biggest lead was 99-60 on a 16-footer by Del Negro with 7:09 left in the fourth period.
