Game Story

AUBURN HILLS, Michigan (Ticker) -- Before George Irvine gets too excited about his debut as Detroit Pistons coach, he should remember who his team was playing against.

"Any person might have their best game against us," said Denver Nuggets forward Antonio McDyess, whose team allowed a career-high 40 points by Jerry Stackhouse to give the Pistons a 130-116 romp in Irvine's first game.

Grant Hill added 27 points and 10 assists and Mikki Moore also scored a career-high 15 points as the Pistons ended their losing streak at three games, all under Alvin Gentry, who was fired Monday.

"I'm really pleased that that's over with," Irvine said. "Right now I love this job. You always do after your team plays well. Tomorrow I'll be back to hating it."

Stackhouse hit 13-of-21 shots, including 6-of-10 from 3-point range.

"I'm not sure we would want him taking 10 3-pointers every night. That's about a week for him usually, but he was really feeling it," Irvine said.

Irvine was named interim coach to replace Gentry, who guided the the Pistons to a 28-30 mark this season. Before tonight's victory, Detroit (29-30) was just 7-15 in its previous 22 games after looking like a legitimate playoff contender earlier this season.

Irvine was on the sidelines as the head man of an NBA team for the first time since a 20-game stint as interim coach of the Indiana Pacers in 1988-89.

McDyess led Denver (27-33) with 29 points on 12-of-18 shooting. Nick Van Exel added 19 points and Raef LaFrentz contributed 12 and 10 rebounds for his fourth straight double-double.

The Pistons, who have beaten Denver four straight in Auburn Hills, turned around the game with a 14-2 burst to start the second half. Detroit, which had been unable to slow the Nuggets' running game in the first half, forced five turnovers during the run.

Christian Laettner got things started with a lay-in, Stackhouse broke free for a dunk, Lindsey Hunter nailed a 3-pointer, Hill drove for a lay-in, Stackhouse nailed a 3-pointer and when Jerome Williams grabbed the rebound of Stackhouse's missed 3-pointer and spun free for a layup, Detroit led 77-68 with 8:11 to play in the third quarter.

"We really stepped it up defensively," Irvine said. "Lindsey did a terrific job on Nick Van Exel in the second half. The whole team stepped it up but Lindsey was at the front."

Denver never got back in the game and Detroit opened a 104-83 lead entering the final period, its highest point total for 36 minutes this season. The Pistons fell one point shy of their season high, which came in a 32-point win over Golden State on February 25.

The Pistons scored 34 points off 20 turnovers by Denver, 10 of which came on steals by Detroit.

The third-quarter surge came after the Pistons trailed much of the first half, falling victim to the Nuggets' fast break.

McDyess scored four points, including a breakaway dunk in a 6-0 run. Denver opened a 34-23 lead when Chris Gatling hit a pair of free throws with 1:18 left in the first quarter.

Hill scored four points and dished to Williams for a pair of layups in a 10-0 spurt that pulled the Pistons within 38-37 with 10:07 left in the second quarter.

Van Exel hit a 22-footer and 3-pointer and fed Keon Clark for a dunk in a 7-0 surge that stretched Denver's lead to 57-48 with 3:19 left in the first half.
