Game Story

ORLANDO, Florida (Ticker) -- Darrell Armstrong scored 17 points to lead six players in double figures and the Orlando Magic came within seconds of the best defensive effort in franchise history in a 103-67 victory over the Chicago Bulls.

John Amaechi scored 16 points and rookie Corey Maggette added 15 for the Magic, who never trailed after the opening minute and led by as many as 38 points. Orlando (29-32) moved into a tie with Milwaukee for the eighth and final playoff berth in the Eastern Conference.

"I was really happy with the effort, the win," Magic coach Doc Rivers said. "I think the win tied us right now with the eighth spot with Milwaukee. We do notice that and that is good. Obviously it is a long way to go."

"It does feel nice, but I've said being in the eighth spot right right is kind of irrelevant, really," Amaechi said. "We can't stop the season right now, so we've got a lot of work to do."

The Magic led 30-16 after one period and turned it into a rout by holding the Bulls to 11 points in the third quarter. When Chicago's Corey Benjamin scored with 15 seconds to go, he denied the Magic a chance to break the club record for fewest points allowed set in a 78-66 win at Dallas on January 15, 1997.

Chris Carr scored 13 points and rookie Elton Brand added 11 and 11 rebounds for the Bulls, who shot just 33 percent (23-of-69) from the field and lost for the ninth time in 10 games.

"They really pressured us and got back on defense," Brand said. "They kept getting layup after layup. They are a pressure team and kept the pressure up. They came out with a lot of intensity and kept it up the whole game."

Chicago's Randy Brown opened the scoring but the Magic tallied the next 14 points. Newcomer Anthony Johnson and Bo Outlaw had four points apiece to give Orlando early control.

The Magic led by 14 points after one period before the Bulls closed to 37-27 on a free throw by Brand with 5:35 remaining in the second quarter. But Amaechi scored 10 points in the rest of the period and a jumper by Armstrong gave Orlando a 53-36 halftime lead.

Armstrong scored six points in a 12-2 surge that began the third quarter and made it a rout. An 18-footer by Johnson, acquired at the trading deadline, extended the lead to 65-38 with 7:18 to play in the period.

Chicago shot 25 percent (3-of-12) and had as many turnovers as shots in the third period, which ended with Orlando holding a 76-47 lead.

"That was our first group's intensity there in the third quarter," said Magic forward Pat Garrity, who scored 10 points. "They just came out where they left off when they started the game, really left them no opportunities to have any hope of winning the game. After that, it was just a matter of finishing them off."

Johnson scored 12 points and Outlaw added 11 and seven rebounds for the Magic, who shot 51 percent (41-of-81) and held a 46-40 rebounding edge. Orlando forced 25 turnovers for 30 points.

"I thought their guard play was terrific all night long," Bulls coach Tim Floyd said. "Johnson played well early. Armstrong did a good job and I thought Chucky Atkins played well. Their athleticism really bothered us tonight."
