Game Story

ORLANDO, Florida (Ticker) -- It was the season in microcosm for Orlando coach Doc Rivers.

John Amaechi scored 13 of his career-high 31 points in the opening quarter and Darrell Armstrong added 12 over the first 12 minutes as the Magic raced to an early lead and hung on to defeat the Denver Nuggets, 110-107.

The youthful Magic occupy the eighth and final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference. Their eighth win in nine home games pulled them within one-half game of Detroit for seventh place and moved them one game ahead of ninth-place Milwaukee.

In a season full of ups and downs, Rivers has earned consideration for NBA Coach of the Year by keeping his team in the postseason hunt, despite a roster full of role players and numerous long losing streaks. Orlando has gone 14-8 since a season-high eight-game losing streak in late January.

Tonight, Amaechi and Armstrong combined for 25 points as the Magic raced to a 34-22 lead. They were forced to hang on, however, failing to record a field goal over the final 4:27.

Trailing 108-95, the Nuggets scored 12 of the final 14 points but were not able to get even in the last minute as Antonio McDyess committed a costly turnover and rookie Chris Herren missed a 3-pointer.

"I was leaning away," Herren said of his potential game-tying basket. "I thought I had it, it was very deep. It was right on. I got a good look at it."

Bo Outlaw had 11 points and a season-high 13 rebounds for Orlando, which won despite shooting 2-of-14 from 3-point range and allowing the Nuggets to make more than half (34-of-67) of their shots.

The Magic led 12-7 four minutes into the contest but Amaechi sank two free throws and Armstrong drained a runner for a nine-point lead.

The lead was 23-15 with 4:05 left in the quarter following a 14-footer by former Magic forward Chris Gatling. But Amaechi hit a free throw and Gatling was whistled for a technical.

Armstrong made the ensuing free throw to push the lead to 10 and Amaechi sank two more from the line with three minutes left. Outlaw sank a 16-footer to push the lead to 29-15 and capped the 8-0 run with a layup with 86 seconds remaining.

"We got the first quarter and held on from there," Rivers said. "Not a great game by us, but a win for us. In the first quarter our defense was sensational and that is why we got the big lead.

"We still have a long way to go. The season does not stop here. If we're in eighth then let's try and catch seventh then let's go to sixth. I don't think we can ever stop trying."

Antonio McDyess led Denver with 35 points and eight rebounds. George McCloud, who was apparently involved in an altercation with former teammate and current Magic guard Ron Mercer after the game, had a season-high 25 points off the bench.

Following the Nuggets' fifth straight loss, McCloud reportedly attacked Mercer over comments he made on a pregame show. McCloud landed one punch to the top of the head and pushed Mercer into a beam before Outlaw separated the two.

"Boys will be boys but I still don't like it," Rivers said. "The bottom line is he was going to see a couple of his old teammates and one of them chose to fight him."

Prior to the game Mercer replied to McCloud's assertion that he shot too much. Mercer, who is sidelined with a left ankle sprain, told reporters that once he returned to the lineup he was going to "bust" McCloud next chance he got.

Amaechi was 12-of-20 from the field and eclipsed his previous high of 25, set February 7 against Golden State.

"He's surprised a lot of people," Armstrong said. "He's played in Division I basketball, so he knows he can play. He's just got to have an opportunity. If he wants to give me a gift now, I'll take a lot of tea and all that you know. British tea at that."

Nuggets starting point guard Nick Van Exel played just 13 minutes before being ejected following his second technical.

"I think Nick's frustrated and he's played too many minutes this year," Nuggets coach Dan Issel said. "We obviously can't win without Nick. We need to get him back on track for the last five weeks."
