Game Story

EAST RUTHERFORD, New Jersey (Ticker) -- Johnny Newman scored a season-high 26 points and fellow reserve Scott Burrell added 16 to lead the surging New Jersey Nets to a 129-91 romp over the Orlando Magic.

Newman made 9-of-13 shots and Burrell 6-of-10 as New Jersey's bench outscored Orlando's, 80-35. The backup forwards ignited the Nets in the second quarter, combining for 24 points as New Jersey outscored Orlando, 33-19, and took the lead for good.

"We scored a lot tonight, but I think defensively we did a great job on their players, we didn't give them anything," said Burrell. "We came off (the bench) hungry and we're going to get our minutes if we stop people. Once you stop people anything can happen and you get more minutes that way."

Kerry Kittles and Keith Van Horn scored 14 points apiece for New Jersey, which has won eight of its last 10 at home and moved within three games of the final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference. The Nets are 25-21 since an abysmal 2-15 start, but also are one-half game behind 10th-place Boston.

"What a wonderful lift we got from the bench," said New Jersey coach Don Casey. "It was just fantastic. We felt very good coming into halftime. These guys are working hard, they're genuine. I couldn't be happier for the players, coming back from the start we had."

Stephon Marbury handed out 10 assists, helping the Nets shoot 56 percent (49-of-87) from the field. New Jersey shot 77 percent (23-of-30) from the foul line, while Orlando went attempted just 14 free throws, making 12. The Nets handled the ball well, recording a season-high 34 assists with just 14 turnovers.

"We're peaking at the right time, we are executing to death on offense and defense and I think executing on defense is definitely helping us," Marbury said. "I think the way that we are playing right now is we're going out and attacking on defense, we're setting the tone on defense early and it's allowing us to set up on offense better."

Darrell Armstrong scored 15 points and John Amaechi added 14 for Orlando, which had its three-game winning streak snapped and fell into a tie with Milwaukee for eighth place in the East. The Magic committed 28 turnovers, leading to 43 points for the Nets.

"Turnovers are going to shoot you every night," Armstrong said. "Give them credit. It seemed they were more desperate for the win and we weren't. We're the hunted, but we should still be the hunter. I don't want to just make the playoffs."

Newman hit a 3-pointer to put the Nets on top for good, 35-32, with 9:25 left in the second period. The teams traded baskets before Lucious Harris hit a 3-pointer with 7:37 to play to push the lead to 42-38 and spark a 20-4 run. Newman capped the burst with two free throws for a 59-44 cushion 49 seconds before halftime.

The Magic cut the deficit to 63-53 on Ben Wallace's follow shot 1:11 into the third quarter. But Van Horn responded with consecutive dunks to start a 10-2 burst.

The Nets held a 92-72 lead after three quarters Newman opened the fourth period with a driving layup. Orlando got no closer than 22 points thereafter.

Amaechi scored 10 points in the first quarter as Orlando took a 30-28 lead.
