Game Story

MIAMI (Ticker) -- Alonzo Mourning had 20 points and 17 rebounds and Clarence Weatherspoon scored all his 11 points in the fourth quarter as the Miami Heat rallied for a 108-104 victory over the Milwaukee Bucks.

The victory extended the Heat's home winning streak to a team record-tying 12 games and kept Miami in first place in the Atlantic Conference. Milwaukee had won the last three meetings between the teams and blew a 15-point lead in this one.

"We have won 12 in a row here at home but we were not ready with our intensity at the beginning of the game," Heat coach Pat Riley said. "We have two days off before Philadelphia comes to town and that bothers me."

Mourning has averaged 26.2 points and 10.6 rebounds in five games since returning from an ankle injury. Tonight, after Miami's only lead of the first half was at 2-0, he felt he had to do more than contribute on the court.

"At halftime in the huddle I told everyone we had to dig deeper," he said. "We stepped it up defensively and started guarding people. That was the difference."

To complement the defensive effort, Weatherspoon hit 5-of-6 shots and grabbed a pair of offensive rebounds in the fourth quarter.

Miami's Jamal Mashburn scored 28 points but was held scoreless in the fourth quarter. Tim Hardaway added 17 points and eight assists.

Ray Allen scored 26 points, Sam Cassell added 22 and Glenn Robinson 20 for the Bucks, who fell one game behind Orlando in the race for the eighth and final playoff berth in the Eastern Conference.

Bruce Bowen hit a pair of 3-pointers in the final 3 1/2 minutes as Miami held onto a slim lead. His 3-pointer with just under two minutes left gave the Heat their largest lead at 105-99.

Mourning blocked a layup by Cassell that could have pulled the Bucks within two points with 50 seconds to play and hit 1-of-2 from the line with 27 seconds left to put the Heat up, 108-103.

"This game shows the impact Mourning has on a basketball game," Cassell said. "On that last drive to the basket his back was completely turned, but he still got a piece of my shot to keep it from going in."

After letting the Bucks shoot 63 percent in the first half, the Heat clamped down defensively in the second half. Miami held Milwaukee to 22 percent (4-of-19) shooting and 12 points in the third period, taking an 80-79 lead.

"If they kept at that pace, there was no way we were going to win," Miami forward P.J. Brown said. "We had to step up the defense."

"As the game goes on, good defensive teams understand what you're doing and make adjustments," Bucks coach George Karl said.

Robinson and Allen fueled a 15-4 surge to start the game. Robinson scored five points and Allen added four in the run, which Cassell capped with a 3-pointer with 7:53 to go in the quarter.

Miami clawed back within 25-23 with 2:02 left behind Hardaway's hot hand. But Cassell hit a pair of jumpers and Tim Thomas nailed a 3-pointer in a 7-0 run to close the quarter, which ended with the Bucks holding a 32-23 lead.

Milwaukee stretched the lead to as much as 15 points in the second period. Allen led the way, scoring 10 points as the Bucks built the advantage to 67-54 at halftime.
