Game StoryPHOENIX (Ticker) -- The Phoenix Suns clearly illustrated the home-court advantage.
The Suns hit just four floor shots in the fourth quarter but connected on 24-of-27 free throws and pulled away for a 107-100 victory over the Minnesota Timberwolves.
Overall, the Suns made 43-of-49 foul shots to just 15-of-20 for the Timberwolves, who saw their five-game road winning streak come to an end and fell three games behind sixth-place Phoenix in the Western Conference playoff race.
"We got into foul trouble and you're not going to beat good teams getting out-shot at the free throw line like we did," Minnesota coach Flip Saunders said. "They played more aggressive than we did and in retrospect, that's why we got into foul trouble."
Penny Hardaway scored 26 points, including 12-of-12 free throws. Cliff Robinson added 24, including 9-of-9 from the line. Jason Kidd, who finished with 12 assists, scored all eight of his points from the stripe.
The backcourt combination of Kidd and Hardaway continued to work for the Suns. Since Hardaway returned from a right foot injury on January 22, Phoenix is 18-8.
"We didn't play our best, but we stuck with it and gutted out a `W,'" Kidd said. "It wasn't one of our prettiest, but when you've got a team that's chasing, trying to get a higher seed, we've got to get these wins."
Terrell Brandon led Minnesota with 18 points and nine assists. Kevin Garnett had 17 and 11 rebounds but Robinson hounded him into 6-of-16 shooting from the field.
"I just tried to do what I can to make him work for everything he gets," Robinson said. "He's a tremendous player. He's going to get a lot of shots, and when you're playing somebody of that caliber, you can't come out and not play hard, because they're going to take advantage of you, so I just try to do what I can to limit him from getting a lot of easy opportunites, and just go from there."
The score was tied 86-86 before the Suns scored 10 straight points. The first eight were at the line before Rodney Rogers connected on a short jumper make it 96-86 with 2:45 left. During that stretch, Minnesota forwards Joe Smith and Wally Szczerbiak both fouled out.
"They shot 49 free throws to our 20. Like my man said on the commercial, you make the call," Garnett said. "It was a bizarre night."
Anthony Peeler scored seven straight points to open the fourth quarter, rallying Minnesota from a 77-70 deficit into a tie with 10:13 to go.
But the Wolves could not overcome the officials' whistles. On the play when Smith fouled out, the call first went against Phoenix. But the call was reversed from a charge on Robinson to a block on Smith.
Szczerbiak fouled out when his arm seemed to graze Hardaway as the Suns guard was starting to make a move around the 3-point arc with about three minutes left.
