Game Story

CHARLOTTE, North Carolina (Ticker) -- Given a chance to gain ground in the Eastern Conference standings, the Charlotte Hornets took advantage, but just barely, holding on for a 77-74 victory over the Chicago Bulls.

Guards David Wesley and Eddie Jones scored 18 points apiece and Elden Campbell had a career-high 20 rebounds for Charlotte, which moved within one-half game of fifth-place Philadelphia in the Eastern Conference.

Derrick Coleman was Charlotte's only other scorer in double figures with 15 points. The Hornets shot just 40 percent (27-of-68) from the field and allowed a 12-point fourth-quarter lead to dwindle to two with just over a minute to play.

"We had two good practices, but we had four days off," said Charlotte coach Paul Silas. "We came back sluggish. I didn't expect that, but I understand it. We couldn't put two units together. When the first unit was clicking, the second wasn't. Don't take anything away from the Bulls, they've beat Miami twice. I'm happy we got the win.'

Chris Carr came off the bench to score 18 points and rookie Elton Brand added 12 and 12 rebounds for Chicago, which has lost four straight and 11 of its last 12 games. Brand has led the Bulls in points or rebounds for 19 consecutive games, but made just 4-of-21 shots from the floor. Hersey Hawkins contributed 11 points for Chicago, which shot just 34 percent (28-of-82).

Charlotte held a 63-55 lead after three quarters and Wesley opened the fourth with a driving layup and two free throws, pushing the margin to 67-55 with 11:23 remaining.

"We'll take the wins, even if they're ugly. We won't give them back," Wesley said. "You just can't quit. Hopefully we can play better and win more decisively. These are the type of teams that can sneak up on you. We have to put them away early."

The Hornets held a 71-59 lead when Brown made a 17-footer with 7:38 to play. But B.J. Armstrong responded with a 14-footer to trigger a 12-1 burst. Six different players scored for Chicago during that run that Brand capped with a follow shot with 69 seconds left. Coleman made one free throw to give Charlotte a 73-70 advantage with 55 seconds remaining and after a turnover by Carr, Jones made two foul shots with 24 seconds to go.

"We won even if it was ugly," Jones said. "They're not a bad team. We have to get some type of rhythm going. I thought we came out with a lot of intensity. We were moving the ball and getting the to the basket. We had terrible, terrible spacing, but that's something we can work on."

Charlotte trailed only in the first four minutes and reeled off an 18-2 run to take a 20-9 lead with 3:52 left in the first period on a 3-pointer by Jones. The Hornets held a 26-17 lead after the first.

Charlotte's biggest lead was 38-24 on two free throws by Brown with just over seven minutes left in the second quarter. Chicago answered with a 16-2 tear to tie the score, 40-40, on a driving layup by Hawkins with 2:41 to play. Campbell made a pair of free throws with 2:21 left and 29 seconds later Wesley had a layup, giving the Hornets a 44-40 lead at the break.

Wesley made a pair of jumper around a basket by Coleman to give the Hornets a 10-point lead three minutes into the third. Chicago did not come closer than five points in the third.
