Game Story

ATLANTA (Ticker) -- Reggie Miller scored 14 of his 28 points during a run spanning the second and third quarters as the Indiana Pacers charged back from a 10-point deficit and posted a 113-107 victory over the Atlanta Hawks.

Jalen Rose added 32 points, Rik Smits 16 and Austin Croshere had 14 and 11 rebounds for the Pacers, who had lost two in a row.

"It was huge. You've got to stop the bleeding, not only that, but play well. We turned the corner," Croshere said.

The victory put Indiana three games ahead of Miami for the Eastern Conference lead.

Alan Henderson had 21 points and eight rebounds for the Hawks, who have lost eight of their last 10 games. Jim Jackson scored 17 points and Dikembe Mutombo added 16.

After closing the first half with a 10-0 run, the Pacers started the third quarter with a 15-5 surge and took a 75-60 lead on a 3-pointer by Miller with 4:36 to go in the period. Miller had nine points in the third-quarter run.

Indiana's defense smothered the Hawks late in the second quarter and throughout the third, limiting them to 3-of-22 shooting from the field during that stretch.

"At the end of the second quarter, a few mistakes really hurt us," Atlanta coach Lenny Wilkens said. "We turned the ball over four or five times, and that allows them to get back in the game and tie the game. But the guys didn't give up. They worked hard and we had some opportunities right there. It's a tough loss for us."

Atlanta put together an 18-8 run late in the fourth quarter and climbed within 103-100 when Mutombo strode through the lane for a dunk with 2:06 left. But Rose hit a pair of free throws and, after Jim Jackson missed a jumper, Croshere had a dunk and the Pacers held on.

"It was a big win for us," Indiana coach Larry Bird said. "They played pretty well the first half, but we played hard and got the job done. I'm very pleased with the way we played. Even if we would have lost, I would have been pleased. We were moving the ball pretty good there, finding open people."

The Hawks controlled the boards for much of the first half and used a 7-1 advantage on the offensive glass to build a 55-45 lead with 3:13 left before the break. But the Pacers charged back.

"We're playing hard, we're just having a couple of stretches during the games where we're letting things get away from us," Henderson said. "A couple of turnovers and give up some easy baskets and that makes it tough for us to get it done. But we've been actually getting some leads and controlling some parts of the game, which is positive for us."

Miller sparked the 10-0 run to end the half. He scored five points in the surge, capping it by picking off Bimbo Coles' pass and streaking for a layin with 27 seconds left. Miller was fouled on the play but missed the free throw that could have put the Pacers ahead at halftime. He also misfired on a long 3-pointer as time expired.
