Game Story

BOSTON (Ticker) -- Antoine Walker scored 25 points to lead the Boston Celtics' best offensive effort of the season, a 121-104 rout of the hapless Golden State Warriors.

Walker, who was 10-of-15 from the field, fueled an explosive third quarter for the Celtics as they stretched a two-point halftime lead into a 19-point bulge entering the final 12 minutes.

Boston made 12-of-21 shots and all 15 of its free throws in the third quarter, falling one point shy of a season-high 42-point first quarter in a 114-112 home loss to Milwaukee on November 26. The Celtics had scored 115 points twice this season, including a 124-115 setback at Detroit on Monday.

Paul Pierce scored 19 points and Danny Fortson added 12 and 13 rebounds off the bench for Boston, which pulled within 2 1/2 games of eighth-place Orlando for the final Eastern Conference playoff spot. The Celtics have won five in a row at FleetCenter and five of six overall.

"What we got tonight was a very professional effort in a game we need," Boston coach Rick Pitino said. "It was great to see us come out so strong in the third quarter, carry some momentum from the locker room and really play aggressively. I just want the last five games of our season to mean something. If they didn't, then I'd be disappointed."

"Our season is on the line and we responded in that second half," Pierce added. "I thought we played real well in that second quarter. It's a lot of fun when you score 35 or 40 points in a quarter."

Larry Hughes continued his prodigious offensive output since coming to Golden State from Philadelphia in a three-way deal on February 16. Hughes scored 32 points for the Warriors, who suffered their eighth straight loss. Golden State has already been eliminated from postseason contention for a sixth straight season.

"We lost the game in the third quarter," Warriors coach Garry St. Jean said. "We really didn't play good defense in that third quarter. Forty-one points is a good indication of that. They opened up the game and we didn't have any response."

"We started out pretty well, getting our shots, getting good looks, but they made the adjustments in the second half and we didn't," Hughes said.

Eric Williams scored 15 points, Tony Battie 12 and Doug Overton added a season-high 11 off the bench for Boston. The Celtics reserves outscored the starters, 64-57.

"I think that was a big key tonight. Our bench was great," Walker said. "(Sixty-four) points shows you the effort."

Rookie Vonteego Cummings matched a season high with 23 points and Donyell Marshall had 14 for Golden State, which shot 44 percent (30-of-68) and yielded 25 points off turnovers.

"They took it to us in that third quarter," Marshall said. "They got up and down the court and we didn't stay with them."

Boston finished 49 percent (40-of-82) from the floor, but made 23-of-44 shots after intermission. The Celtics held a 41-39 advantage on the boards.

"I think we're in a position where we need 12 or 13 wins (to make the playoffs) the rest of the way," Fortson said. "I think that's what it's going to take."

Pierce hit two free throws and Calbert Cheaney dunked to start the third-quarter explosion. Marshall made two from the line to cut the deficit to 55-52 with 10:20 remaining in the period, but Overton knocked down a 22-footer, Forston made two free throws and Walker slammed to open a 62-52 cushion with 9:09 left.

Dana Barros came off the bench and buried a 3-pointer with 4:28 remaining in the third quarter, stretching the advantage to 81-64.
