Game Story

MILWAUKEE (Ticker) -- In dire need of a spark to propel them back into a tie for the final Eastern Conference playoff spot, the Milwaukee Bucks got one from All-Star guard Ray Allen.

Allen scored 17 of his 28 points in the second half as the Bucks rallied for a key 106-96 victory over the Houston Rockets.

Coming off a 108-104 loss to Miami on Tuesday in which they blew a 15-point lead, the Bucks turned to their 6-5 Olympian to show some fire tonight.

Allen responded by burying 10-of-18 shots, handing out seven assists and grabbing six rebounds in 42 minutes. He also had three steals and blocked two shots for Milwaukee (31-34), which pulled even with idle Orlando for eighth place in the East.

"I thought Ray played a complete game," Milwaukee coach George Karl said. "We put together a good offensive performance in the second half. Lately, it's been the opposite. We'd play a good first half and then come out flat."

Sam Cassell scored 22 points and Allen's fellow All-Star Glenn Robinson added 19 for the Bucks, who completed a six-game season sweep of teams from Texas, having knocked off the Rockets, San Antonio and Dallas twice each.

"We had to do it," Cassell said. "We adjusted to what they did in the first half and just started making some shots. We've got to worry about ourselves. I can't be worrying about (seventh-place) Detroit, Orlando or anyone else. We just need to get our wins."

"We came on later than sooner," Robinson said. "We just want to play a full game. We play better when there's more moving the ball. We've got to pass to get ourselves better shots. I just hope we can keep getting better and play like we did early in the season."

Steve Francis scored 22 points and Cuttino Mobley added 20 off the bench for the Rockets, who led 48-40 at the half before watching helplessly as the Allen and the Bucks buried 26-of-36 shots after intermission.

Houston has lost five straight and 10 of its last 13.

"Ray Allen and Glenn Robinson are good players," Rockets coach Rudy Tomjanovich said. "They just stopped us from moving the ball. We just didn't get it done."

Moochie Norris scored 11 points off the bench for the Rockets, who shot 42 percent (30-of-72) and yielded 22 points off turnovers.

"We just turned the ball over too much to win the game," Francis said. "It didn't seem like everybody was on the same page in the second half. Glenn and Ray hit big shots to carry them through."

Scott Williams scored 12 points and Ervin Johnson grabbed 13 rebounds for the Bucks, who were 55 percent (41-of-74) from the floor and held a 40-36 advantage on the boards.

Allen forged a 68-68 tie with just over a minute remaining in the third quarter and Cassell followed with a free throw and a 12-footer to give the Bucks a three-point lead entering the final period.

Robinson made back-to-back jumpers to give the Bucks a 79-72 lead early in the fourth quarter and Williams' dunk with 6:39 to play made it an 87-77 bulge. Allen's 26-footer with 1:36 left sealed the win, making it 102-89.

"Allen, Robinson and Cassell came on at the end and took over the game," Mobley said. "It's hard to win when those three get going."
