Game Story

CHARLOTTE, North Carolina (Ticker) -- Marcus Camby returned to form and so have the New York Knicks.

Camby collected 15 points and eight rebounds off the bench and was part of a balanced attack as the hot-shooting Knicks routed the Charlotte Hornets, 118-99, for their fourth straight win.

The 6-11 Camby was a favorite for the Sixth Man Award until he strained his ACL on February 6 against Miami. He returned on Tuesday but did not attempt a shot in 15 minutes of a 91-85 home win over Houston.

The forward-center was much more active tonight, making 6-of-9 shots and blocking a pair. He was part of an attack that shot 55 percent (42-of-76) from the field and handed the Hornets their worst home loss of the season.

Allan Houston scored 27 points on 10-of-15 shooting and Latrell Sprewell added 23, making 11-of-11 free throws. Even Charlie Ward got into the act as the low-scoring point guard added 20, making 4-of-4 3-pointers.

"It's a great win, especially against a quality team like Charlotte," Sprewell said. "We shot the ball well but came up big on the defensive end."

"We played a good team tonight," Knicks coach Jeff Van Gundy said. "Road wins are very satisfying, especially in this fashion against a team like the Hornets."

David Wesley scored 24 points and Elden Campbell added 20 and 10 rebounds for the Hornets, who had a two-game winning streak snapped. Charlotte fell to 24-9 at home.

Hornets All-Star guard Eddie Jones managed just nine points on 3-of-10 shooting. In the last meeting between the teams on Febraury 7, Jones scored 34 points in a 95-85 win.

"Last time we played Charlotte, Eddie Jones played a good ballgame for them," Sprewell said. "We were able to contain him tonight. He also got into foul trouble early in the game, which helped us out a lot."

The Knicks took the lead for good at 13-10 on a 3-pointer by Ward with 8:29 left in the first quarter. Patrick Ewing scored eight points and Houston and Ward added seven apiece as New York opened a 30-22 lead after 12 minutes.

A basket by rookie Baron Davis pulled the Hornets within 33-32 with 7:30 left in the second quarter before the Knicks took control with a 14-3 burst. Former Hornet Larry Johnson scored four points in the run and Sprewell capped it with a basket, making it 47-35 with 3:34 remaining in the first half.

New York led 56-45 at halftime and put away the game with 10 straight points early in the third quarter. Ward drilled a 3-pointer, Sprewell had a three-point play, Houston made a layup and Sprewell hit two free throws for a 75-51 lead with 6:32 to go.

Ewing scored 10 points and Johnson grabbed 10 rebounds for the Knicks, who led by as many as 27 points. new York made 28-of-31 free throws.

"Everybody played well, not just one particular person," Ewing said. "Our bench came up big and gave us a lift all night long. That's what we need; everyone needs to contribute."

Derrick Coleman scored 14 points and Davis added 12 for the Hornets, who shot 49 percent (40-of-81) but made just 1-of-8 3-pointers.

"We got beat every way you can," Hornets coach Paul Silas said. "They came in and did what they had to do. We had no flow. Their defense was into us and we never got our main guys rolling."
