Game Story

CLEVELAND (Ticker) -- Jamal Mashburn scored Miami's last 10 points, including the game-winning jumper with three seconds left, to lead the Heat to a 92-90 victory over the Cleveland Cavaliers, who have lost six straight games.

With Alonzo Mourning fouling out and P.J. Brown going down in the opening quarter, Mashburn put the Heat on his shoulders and hit a number of key baskets. Miami won its fifth straight game and defeated Cleveland for the sixth consecutive time.

"It was one of those games that we simply had to find a way to win and we did," Miami coach Pat Riley said. "Mashburn came up big at the end and made three or four great shots. Both teams were dead tired, and it wasn't the prettiest game in the world, but we have to take the win."

Brown left two minutes into the contest after spraining his ankle while Mourning, who was saddled with foul trouble throughout, managed only four points and five rebounds in 24 ineffective minutes.

"Alonzo had one of his all-timers (worst games)," Riley said. "I don't think I've ever seen him go through a game like that. He had one basket and six fouls. We were just very fortunate to win."

"The bottom line is, we pulled out an ugly, ugly win and Jamal put us on his shoulders and carried us," Mourning said.

Miami trailed 85-82 with 3:17 to play when Mashburn drained consecutive jumpers to give the Heat the lead with 2:26 left. After Cleveland's fourth turnover of the period, Mashburn nailed a 20-footer from the right side for a three-point lead with 1:51 remaining.

Bobby Sura tied it with a 3-pointer but Mashburn responded with a left baseline jumper, putting the Heat ahead, 90-88, with 40 seconds left. Brevin Knight's driving layup again tied it with 23 seconds remaining, setting up Mashburn's game-winning shot.

Knight missed a 12-footer at the buzzer. Shawn Kemp had 22 points and 12 rebounds for Cleveland, which has lost nine of 12.

Despite the loss, Cavaliers coach Randy Wittman saw some promising signs from his team.

"I thought as a team that we were as active and on the same page as we have been in a while," Wittman said. "If a guy broke down, there was someone there to help him and everybody had that type of presence on the floor tonight."

Both team had the range in the opening quarter. Miami took a 32-26 lead on the strength of 60 percent (12-of-20) shooting and 13 points by Mashburn, while Cleveland was able to stay close by hitting 53 percent (9-of-17).

Neither team made shots in the second quarter. Cleveland shot just 23 percent (5-of-22) but Miami could not take advantage, converting only 30 percent (6-of-20). The Heat took a 47-44 lead into halftime.

Points became even harder to come by in the third quarter as both teams combined for only seven baskets and 29 points. Trailing 59-54 with two minutes remaining, Cleveland reeled off seven straight free throws to take a 61-59 lead entering the final period.

Tim Hardaway opened the fourth quarter by scoring Miami's first nine points and Bruce Bowen hit a 3-pointer and a short jumper to give the Heat a 73-69 lead with 5:05 remaining. Cleveland battled back and Sura's first basket of the game, a 3-pointer from from the right side, put the Cavs ahead, 77-76, with 1:31 left.

Sura's running flip with 4.8 second remaining sent the game into overtime.

"I missed some easy shots and some easy layups, but I made a lot of stuff happen, Sura said. "I played good defense and got on some other guys shots. We played hard and we played well. We would have beat a lot of teams with our effort tonight."

Hardaway had 21 points and seven assists for Miami, which shot 37 percent (33-of-89), including 8-of-22 from behind the arc.

Lamond Murray had 14 points and seven rebounds, Sura had 13 and 11 and Wesley Person also added 13 points for Cleveland, which shot 36 percent (27-of-76) and committed 19 turnovers.

"I thought it was a hard-fought game on both ends," Person said. "We came out and played well on the defensive end and took them right down to the wire and then to overtime. It came down to one big play, and they made the big shot in the end."
