Game Story

MINNEAPOLIS (Ticker) -- Rookie Wally Szczerbiak scored 10 of his 27 points in a decisive third-quarter run as the Minnesota Timberwolves recorded their seventh win in nine games, 109-82 over the Milwaukee Bucks.

Szczerbiak drilled a pair of 3-pointers during the 22-5 burst as the Timberwolves opened an 81-54 lead with 3:34 left in the third. Minnesota shot 16-of-21 in the period to build a game-high 35-point lead en route to its fifth victory in seven home contests.

The Timberwolves outscored Milwaukee, 41-12, in the third quarter, tying a team record for points in that period. They established the mark against the Los Angeles Clippers on December 8, 1995.

"We established ourselves right away and we moved the ball," Minnesota coach Flip Saunders said. "No matter if we play Milwaukee, San Antonio or Portland, our game has to be the same."

Terrell Brandon scored 14 points in the quarter and Szczerbiak 13 for Minnesota, which had lost its last two home games against the Bucks.

"We did a good job in the third quarter. I think that was about as good as any team can play," Szczerbiak said. "We're learning from our mistakes and that's the sign of a good young team."

"We moved the ball well and got some good shots," Brandon said. "Wally played good pressure 'D', KG (Kevin Garnett) hit the open shots. It was nothing but a total team effort."

Minnesota shot 56 percent (46-of-82) from the floor and drilled 7-of-14 3-pointers to move into a virtual tie with the Seattle SuperSonics for sixth place in the Western Conference. The Wolves are one game ahead of the Sacramento Kings for seventh.

Milwaukee endured a four-minute stretch without a field goal and shot just 4-of-14 in the quarter to suffer its sixth straight road loss. The Bucks' last victory away from the Bradley Center was February 15 against Dallas.

"It was a combination of our bad offense and bad defense and their great offense," Milwaukee coach George Karl said. "We apparently have the ability to turn teams on offensively. We got smashed."

Despite the loss, Milwaukee remained tied with Orlando for the eighth and final playoff spot in the East.

"They got the momentum and we just didn't have it in the third quarter," Bucks guard Sam Cassell said. "They did what they had to. They got wide-open looks and made their shots."

Terrell Brandon had 28 points and 13 rebounds and Garnett added 17 points for the Timberwolves, who have scored at least 100 points in four of the last five contests.

Glenn Robinson scored 20 points, Cassell added 17 and Tim Thomas had 12 for the Bucks, who shot just 37 percent (29-of-78) overall and were outscored 57-36 in the second half.
