Game StoryLOS ANGELES (Ticker) -- The Washington Wizards got a big boost from their bench and matched a season high with their third straight win, a 105-93 victory over the shorthanded Los Angeles Clippers.
Reserves Tracy Murray and Chris Whitney scored nine points each in the second quarter, when the Wizards took the lead for good. Forward Don Reid, signed a week ago after being waived by the Detroit Pistons, scored 15 points as Washington's bench held a 61-24 scoring edge. He has been labeled a "secret weapon" by his teammates.
"That's a new phrase used with my name," Reid said. "(I'm) just coming out each game, working hard and continuing to push through the whole game."
Mitch Richmond scored 21 points and Juwan Howard added 20 for the Wizards, who also won three in a row from December 16-21. In the opener of a five-game road trip, Washington beat Los Angeles on the road for the fifth straight time dating to December 22, 1993.
"Our second unit came in and did an excellent job in the second quarter to kind of give us a little cushion," Richmond said.
"We're definitely playing a lot harder," Wizards coach Darrell Walker said. "We're keeping our team in position to win basketball games."
Tyrone Nesby had 20 points and Derek Anderson chipped in with 18 for the Clippers, who scored the game's first eight points and still trailed 55-39 at halftime en route to their fourth straight loss.
"They've got some pretty good guys coming off the bench," Clippers interim coach Jim Todd said.
Los Angeles played without rookie forward Lamar Odom, second on the team in scoring, rebounding and assists, who sat out with a strained right calf. Leading scorer Maurice Taylor collected 15 points and 11 rebounds before leaving with a sprained left ankle early in the fourth quarter.
The Clippers (14-54) are 4-32 since January 9. They remained tied with the Chicago Bulls for the worst record in the league.
For the second straight game, Los Angeles raced to an early lead and gave it away. It was not as dramatic as Saturday's 44-point reversal against Sacramento on Saturday but had the same outcome.
"We were aware of the Clippers getting off fast," Richmond said. "We didn't start off the right way and they jumped on us right away. It was good that we didn't let it get farther than their 8-0 lead. We came back quickly."
A layup by Nesby made it 8-0 just 2:20 into the game but the Wizards went to their bench late in the first period and closed to 25-24 entering the second quarter. Washington trailed 31-28 before Whitney made two 3-pointers, Murray added one and Reid had a three-point play in a 17-0 burst that gave the Wizards a 45-31 lead with 4:24 left before halftime.
"We had a nice lead early and we just let them get a couple easy ones," Todd said. "And they got back in it."
A dunk by Aaron Williams, who scored 12 points, beat the buzzer and gave the Wizards a 55-39 bulge at intermission. Richmond's 3-pointer and Howard's dunk extended the lead to 68-49 with 6:55 left in the third quarter.
Los Angeles closed to 78-70 entering the final period but got no closer as Washington's bench scored 20 points in the fourth quarter.
Murray scored 15 points, Williams 12 and Whitney 11 for the Wizards, who shot 46 percent (41-of-89) from the field. Whitney added nine assists.
Eric Piatkowski started for Odom and scored 10 points for the Clippers, who shot 40.5 percent (32-of-79) and committed 17 turnovers.
