Game Story

DENVER (Ticker) -- Juwan Howard scored five of his 22 points during a decisive burst at the outset of the third quarter as the Washington Wizards coasted to a 100-86 triumph over the Denver Nuggets.

Already nursing a 14-point halftime lead, Washington used a 14-3 run to put the game out of reach. Howard's five points fueled an 11-0 start and, after Chris Herren hit a 3-pointer for Denver's first basket of the quarter, Chris Whitney buried a 3-pointer to give the Wizards a 75-50 lead with 6:49 to go.

Denver missed its first 10 shots of the quarter until Herren's basket and made only 5-of-19 from the field during the third period.

The Nuggets cut the deficit to 81-70 with 9:10 to play and had a chance to get within single digits. But George McCloud missed an open 3-pointer and Denver had two more empty possessions, deflating any possibilites of a comeback.

"We made some shots and defended well," Washington coach Darrell Walker said. "It was a good defensive effort by our guys. We got our lead by defending. They made a little run and then we got it back again. Overall we shot the ball well and rebounded well and we only had 13 turnovers."

Mitch Richmond also scored 22 points for the Wizards, who had five players in double figures and won for the fourth time in five games. Washington improved to 2-1 on its four-game road trip.

McCloud and Nick Van Exel each scored 18 points for the Nuggets, who were whistled for four technical fouls. Coach Dan Issel was ejected in the second quarter after receiving a pair for delay of game.

"What good does it do?" said Issel, who collected his fifth ejection of the season and 11th career. "I'll get fined and he's the one with the whistle. It was their illegal defense. I've been trying hard. I didn't say a word to the officials. I don't need to defend myself."

Chris Whitney started in place of guard Rod Strickland, who was placed on the injured list with a strained left quad. Whitney scored 14 points and dished out seven assists in 38 minutes of action.

Denver led 5-4 early but that was its last lead as Washington used an 8-2 run capped by Howard's eight-foot shot midway through the opening quarter.

Chris Gatling drained a hook to pull the Nuggets within 27-23 early in the second quarter. Washington took control thereafter, going ahead by as many as 11 points three times before the intermission.

"When you are playing so hard and you get a tough call, it's just frustrating," Gatling said. "Dan was yelling at us and then he gets a tech and then he asks why and then he got another quick one. We've got to play carefree and take it from there. We just have to play hard and have fun."

Howard finished with 11 rebounds and shot 10-of-21 from the field for the Wizards, who held the Nuggets to just 34 percent shooting (27-of-80) from the field.

"I can play the game, I was comfortable out there," Howard said. "My shot was falling. The key to the game was stopping them on the inside. We have to give our interior defense credit. (The Nuggets) are big and athletic and we really played well on the defensive end."

Raef LaFrentz posted his 23rd double-double of the season with 12 points and 12 rebounds for Denver, which fell to 2-11 in March. It was also the third consecutive contest in which the Nuggets failed to reach 90 points.
