Game Story

CHICAGO (Ticker) -- There are no ties in the NBA, but it would be hard to find two teams less deserving of victory.

Hersey Hawkins netted his team's final six points for his only scoring of the game as the Chicago Bulls snapped an eight-game losing skid with an ugly 70-68 victory over the Denver Nuggets.

Hawkins was invisible for the first 46 minutes, missing all five of his shots. But the veteran guard got on the board with two free throws with 2:01 left to give the Bulls a 66-63 lead.

Nick Van Exel tied it with a 3-pointer with 1:47 left, but with the shot clock winding down, Hawkins answered with his only basket of the game to put Chicago back on top 23 seconds later.

Keon Clark's putback tied it again with 29 seconds to play, but Hawkins was fouled on the subsequent possession and coolly drained two from the line, putting the Bulls ahead, 70-68, with 8.2 seconds left.

"If the ball's in your hands with the shot clock running down, you should try to make the shot," Hawkins said. "It was our advantage that we were in the bonus. We were able to be a little more aggressive and draw some contact and get some fouls. To finally win a close one really feels good."

Van Exel missed a 3-pointer as time wound down and Hawkins grabbed the rebound, ending a game that neither team seemed to want.

"Ugly. An ugly game," Nuggets coach Dan Issel said. "I'm sure the Bulls will like it though. The bottom line is you can't shoot 33 percent from the field and 55 percent from the free-throw line and expect to win. We've got to figure out why at this stage we're making the same mistakes. You can blame youth and inexperience up to a point, then you have to take responsibility."

Rookie Elton Brand was the game's lone bright spot, collecting 26 points and 15 rebounds and bolstering his chances for Rookie of the Year honors.

"We've been in so many close games the last two weeks or so, that it feels good to pull out this win," Brand said. "I told Hersey to keep on shooting and I had faith in him and he stepped up and hit those shots on the free-throw line."

Clark had 18 points and 10 rebounds for Denver, which has lost four in a row and 11 of its last 12 games.

The Bulls failed to score in the first 3:57 but the Nuggets were equally inept and the score was tied at 19-19 after 12 minutes. The teams battled to a 35-35 tie at the half and were tied again, at 52-52, entering the final period, as both teams continued to misfire.

Neither team led by more than three points in a fourth quarter that featured five ties and four lead changes.

Ron Artest scored 15 points and Fred Hoiberg had 11 for the Bulls, who shot 30 percent (24-of-79) and were outrebounded 55-46.

Antonio McDyess had 10 points and eight rebounds and Raef Lafrentz added nine and 15 boards for Denver, which shot 33 percent (25-of-75), hit only 16-of-29 free throws and committed 24 turnovers.

"This was a tough one," Lafrentz said. "Offensively, we couldn't throw the ball in the ocean. With that kind of poor shooting and turnovers, it's tough to win."
