Game Story

ATLANTA (Ticker) -- Anthony Mason put together his sixth career triple-double while the Atlanta Hawks barely mustered an effort.

Mason had 12 points, 15 rebounds and 11 assists as the Charlotte Hornets coasted past the lifeless Hawks for their third straight victory, 86-70.

Mason, who collected 12 points, 10 boards and 11 assists against Houston on February 22, fed rookie Baron Davis for a driving layup with 3:54 left in the first half, capping a 12-2 run that put Charlotte ahead to stay, 34-28, with 3:54 left in the first half.

"I wasn't concerned about (the triple-double)," Mason said. "I just wanted to get a victory. They're a dangerous team. I don't know if it was so much they weren't into it; the Hornets are playing the type of basketball that will make people say they weren't into it. We're really stifling teams on defense."

While Mason was having a field day, Todd Fuller was busy posting his first career double-double in place of flu-stricken center Elden Campbell. Fuller had 11 points and 15 rebounds for the Hornets, who pulled within 1 1/2 games of idle Toronto for fifth place in the Eastern Conference.

"I just found out a few minutes before the game (that I was starting)," Fuller said. "I just wanted to play as hard as I could. I had some adrenaline going so that helped. I did the little things like block out and go for the ball when it came off the glass."

Eddie Jones scored eight of his 24 points during a breathtaking 14-1 fourth-quarter burst that saw Charlotte open an 82-61 cushion with 2:47 to play.

"We were looking for that run," Charlotte coach Paul Silas said. "We knew it would come eventually. Eddie hit a couple of big 3s and I think that was it, we put it away."

"It was necessary," Jones added. "We want to be a good team. We have to come out and give that effort throughout the game. When we went up 18, there was a feeling that if we could sustain the lead for another two minutes, we'd be all right."

The Hornets snapped a five-game winless skid in Atlanta and posted their second straight win after seven consecutive losses to the Hawks.

Dikembe Mutombo had 11 points and 20 rebounds for the Hawks, who have dropped three straight and seven of eight. The points were a season low for Atlanta and marked the eighth time it has been held below 80 points, all since January 21.

"The summer's getting longer and longer every day," Mutombo said. "Maybe I need to join a midnight mass. It's just tough. You want to win no matter the circumstances. I know they want to play the young guys. It's hard, it's part of being a professional. I'm glad I've got my wife and my son. It's just been tough."

Derrick Coleman had 11 points and eight rebounds and Davis scored 10 points for the Hornets, who shot 43 percent (36-of-84) from the field and held a 51-46 edge on the boards.

Alan Henderson scored 17 points for Atlanta, which shot a dismal 33 percent (29-of-87).

"We just didn't get it done," Henderson said. "This has been a struggle for everybody. It's been really frustrating. You just try to come out and stay focused every night."

The Hawks led 26-22 after Bimbo Coles buried an eight-footer with 9:20 remaining in the first half. Fuller made 1-of-2 at the line, Davis hit a runner and Coleman made it 26-26 with a free throw 7:07 before intermission.

Davis had a dunk, a layup and two free throws as the Hornets used a quick 8-2 spurt to pull in front for good, 34-28, with 3:54 left in the half.

Lorenzen Wright's driving layup with five seconds left in the half pulled Atlanta within 36-35, but Chucky Brown beat the buzzer with a 17-footer, giving Charlotte a three-point lead.

Atlanta's Roshown McLeod knotted the score at 38-38 early in the third period. But Jones made a 19-footer, and Coleman, who left the game to take stitches on his eyelid after catching an elbow in the first half, made a layup to give Charlotte a 42-38 lead with 10:08 remaining in the third quarter.

Jones followed another layup by Coleman with a short jumper as the Hornets took a 62-54 lead into the fourth quarter. Jones had a 3-pointer and a layup before rookie Eddie Robinson's 16-footer stretched the advantage to 82-61 with less than three minutes to play.

"It's terrible. If you're a competitor, you hate to lose by one, nevertheless 20," said Atlanta guard Jimmy Jackson, who scored just six points on 2-of-13 shooting. "It's frustrating. You don't want to lose like that. I don't even know what to say. You've just got to be as professional as possible."
