Game Story

HOUSTON (Ticker) -- Yes, things can be worse for the Chicago Bulls.

The Bulls suffered the most lopsided road loss in franchise history and fell two points shy of an overall team low in a 123-78 pasting by the Houston Rockets.

This game was taken out of NBC's regional rotation and it was easy to see why. En route to its ninth loss in 10 games, Chicago suffered its worst loss since a 115-68 rout by Orlando on April 2 of last season.

The once-mighty Bulls (14-55) trailed by 49 points after three quarters and are just one game ahead of the Los Angeles Clippers for the league's worst record.

"They totally dominated every facet of the game," Bulls coach Tim Floyd said. "We did not have a good effort. I give the Rockets all the credit. They played well on both ends of the floor and maintained their intensity throughout the game."

Houston notched its largest margin of victory of the season, falling seven points short of a franchise best. The Rockets defeated the New Jersey Nets, 139-87, on October 18, 1978.

"We gave an outstanding effort today, we had good ball movement, played aggressive defense and shot the ball well," Houston coach Rudy Tomjanovich said. "We can't ask for much more than that."

The Rockets closed the first quarter with 13-1 run, opening a 27-13 lead. Walt Williams scored eight of his 10 points in that run, including a pair of 3-pointers.

"Early in the season, I was only playing 18-20 minutes," Williams said. "I figured I had to show them I could play. When you're not getting the minutes, you tend to press it and that's what I was doing."

The onslaught continued into the second period when Houston finished the half on a 19-4 spurt for a 60-34 lead. Moochie Norris scored nine points and Cuttino Mobley and Matt Bullard added five apiece.

Houston established a season high for points in a quarter when it outscored Chicago, 42-19, in the third period.

Coming in with just one win in their last 10 games, the Rockets shot 51 percent (23-of-45) in the first half and improved to 7-0 this season when hitting at least 50 percent. The Bulls were held to just 35 percent (14-of-40).

Williams scored a season-high 24 points on 9-of-14 shooting and rookie Steve Francis added 19 for Houston, which swept Chicago for the first time since the 1992-93 season. Mobley added 15 points, Norris 14 and Kenny Thomas 13 and 10 rebounds for his sixth career double-double.

"I thought we had a great team effort today. We passed, shot and rebounded," Francis said. "That's what you have to do to win in this league."

The Rockets shot 53 percent (45-of-85) overall and made a season-high 15 3-pointers on 32 shots.

Elton Brand scored 24 points and fellow rookie Ron Artest added 22 for the Bulls, who shot 41 percent (33-of-81) and committed 20 turnovers.

"The difference in the game was the Rockets came out aggressive," Brand said. "They were going by us from the beginning, playing more aggressive on defense and we responded with no intensity."
