Game Story

MILWAUKEE (Ticker) --The Milwaukee Bucks kept alive their playoff hopes while the Boston Celtics were left with little but hope for next season.

Ray Allen scored 27 points and Sam Cassell added 22 and 11 assists as the Bucks remained within striking distance of the final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference with a 99-84 victory over the slumping Celtics.

Milwaukee never trailed and won for only the second time in five games. With 12 games left -- all but one against teams with losing records -- the Bucks (33-37) remained 1 1/2 games behind eighth-place Orlando in the playoff race.

"We've got to keep winning," Milwaukee coach George Karl said. "We still have two games against Orlando, and we need to win one to win the tiebreaker. Our guys know what this game was worth, and it's importance, and they got it. It's going to come down to the last week. I've been saying that all year."

Antoine Walker scored 22 points and Eric Williams added 14 off the bench for Boston (30-40), which suffered its fourth straight loss and fell 4 1/2 games behind the Magic with 12 games left.

"We gotta go 10-1 to go to the playoffs," Boston coach Rick Pitino said. "If we go 10-1 then we are still in it. That's motivation."

The Bucks led by 11 points entering the fourth quarter and a jumper by Allen extended Milwaukee's lead to 78-65 with 10:34 remaining. Boston scored the next five points to move within 78-70 with just over nine minutes to play.

But Cassell took over down the stretch as he scored 11 points and handed out three assists in the final 8:16 of the game. His three-point play with 4:32 left gave Milwaukee a commanding 91-74 lead and Boston never got closer than 14 the rest of the way.

"This was very important," Milwaukee forward Darvin Ham said. "We have to start putting more of these kinds of wins together to get to the postseason. You have to win games, you have to win at home and you have to win definitely."

Glenn Robinson scored 17 points and Ervin Johnson contributed 11 rebounds for Milwaukee, which shot 51 percent (41-of-81) but made only 14-of-21 free throws.

An 11-1 run late in the third quarter allowed Milwaukee to open its largest lead at 73-54. Cassell and Robinson had four points each in the surge, with Robinson's 17-foot jumper giving the Bucks a 19-point advantage with 3:24 remaining.

The Celtics closed the third quarter on a 9-1 run as Dana Barros had four points and Danny Fortson added three, including a free throw with one minute remaining to make it 74-63.

Allen went 5-of-8 from the field and scored 12 points, including 10 in a 17-6 opening run as the Bucks took a 25-19 lead after one quarter.

Milwaukee extended its lead to 49-33 as five different players scored in an 11-2 surge, capped by a 3-pointer from Allen with 2:04 left.

Williams scored seven points in the second quarter, including a three-point play in a 7-0 run as Boston cut the deficit to nine with 44 seconds left, but Robinson and Cassell combined to score the last four points of the half as the Bucks moved out to a 53-40 advantage.

Boston's Paul Pierce, who came into the game averaging 20.3 points, was held to 13 on 4-of-16 shooting. Barros made 5-of-7 shots and scored 11 off the bench and Fortson added 17 rebounds for the Celtics, who shot 40 percent (30-of-74), including just 4-of-23 from behind the arc.
