Game Story

HOUSTON (Ticker) -- The Houston Rockets continued their roll through the worst teams in the NBA as Walt Williams had 20 points and 11 rebounds in a 121-86 victory over the Golden State Warriors.

The Rockets led by at least 23 points throughout the second half and posted their second blowout win in as many games, having routed Chicago, 123-78, on Sunday.

Houston, which scored 120 points in consecutive games for the first time in five years, has won three in a row at home. The wins have come against the Warriors, Bulls and Los Angeles Clippers, who began play tonight a combined 45-165.

"It felt good to get two back-to-back big wins like this," said Rockets rookie Steve Francis, who had 15 points, eight rebounds and five assists. "This lets you know that if we come out and play aggressively and rebound, there are not too many teams that can beat us."

Shandon Anderson also scored 20 points for the Rockets, who had lost nine of 11 games and already had been eliminated from postseason contention. They have the fourth-worst record in the Western Conference at 27-44.

"We're a young team," Anderson said. "We've got fresh legs and tonight a lot of guys contributed. We're playing the type of basketball we set out to play at the start of the year."

Houston had six players score in double figures, shot 50 percent from the field (44-of-88), handed out 30 assists and held a 55-38 rebounding advantage.

Larry Hughes scored 22 points for the Warriors, who shot 40 percent (38-of-96) from the floor en route to their sixth straight loss and 14th in 15 tries.

"This is as bad as I've seen," Golden State coach Garry St. Jean said. "I can't find many positives tonight. I'm disappointed. Mentally, we weren't sharp about what we wanted to do defensively. You combine that with shooting under 40 percent and you're going to have problems."

The Rockets used a 12-0 run to build a 24-14 lead with 2:37 left in the first quarter. Williams had seven points in the burst, giving Houston the lead for good, 15-14, with a dunk and capping the run with a 3-pointer.

"We ran the ball really well tonight," said Williams, whose team held a 22-11 advantage in fast-break points. "We pushed the ball and were unselfish."

Williams, who added six assists, dunked again with 27 seconds to play in the quarter as the Rockets took a 32-19 advantage into the second period. They built a 60-31 cushion with a 28-12 run to start the quarter.

"Tonight, we had a killer instinct," said Rockets coach Rudy Tomjanovich. "I'm proud of our team. It seemed like everyone got the ball out there. We had open shots all over the place."

Kelvin Cato scored 18 points, Cuttino Mobley added 16 off the bench and Matt Bullard 10 for Houston, which improved to 8-0 when shooting at least 50 percent.

Mookie Blaylock scored 14 points in just 18 minutes and rookie Vonteego Cummings added 12 before fouling out for Golden State, which has gone seven games without scoring 100 points.

The Warriors began the game the way they ended it -- cold from the field. They shot 8-of-26 in the first quarter and 9-of-26 in the fourth.

"This is a terrible game for us," said Hughes, who hit only 9-of-26 shots. "We didn't have any intensity from the start. We missed a lot of shots. They were good looks, but we didn't knock them down, and it gave them a chance to run."

"This was a terrible outing. It's an embarrassment," added Golden State forward Jason Caffey, who scored 11 points on 5-of-6 shooting. "The sooner I put it behind me, the better."
