Game Story

ATLANTA (Ticker) -- Dikembe Mutombo had 24 points, 16 rebounds and seven blocks and Alan Henderson scored 10 of his season-high 24 points in a pivotal first-half run as the Atlanta Hawks edged the Denver Nuggets, 116-111.

Mutombo had a huge game against his former team. He fell three points shy of his season high set December 14 against Minnesota and maintained his league-leading rebound average.

"Anybody who has let you go in the past, you don't mind beating them," Mutombo said. "It was a good way to do it. It was just good to win this game."

Henderson scored 10 points in 19-4 burst that began late in the first quarter and turned a seven-point deficit into a 43-35 lead with 9:11 left in the second. The run was capped by a jumper by LaPhonso Ellis, also a former Nugget.

"It's just good to get a win," Henderson said. "It's been a tough year for us. We got the ball moving around and knocked down some shots. Tonight, we made some baskets."

Ellis scored 16 points and Jimmy Jackson added 14 for the Hawks, who tied a season high in points and beat Denver in Atlanta for the 11th straight time since December 10, 1988.

"The offense was really working," Hawks coach Lenny Wilkens said. "We were executing, we really moved the ball well and we made our shots."

The Hawks also shot 55 percent (45-of-82) from the field and held a 47-33 rebounding advantage. Physical play created a confrontation between Mutombo and Nuggets forward Antonio McDyess.

"We know they are a great rebounding team," Mutombo said. "The best way was not to let them get the easy baskets. That's why McDyess and I had a little confrontation. I wouldn't let him get the easy baskets."

"We talk about blocking out all the time," Wilkens said. "If we block out and stay at home, we'll get some rebounds. Dikembe will always get his share. I thought we did a good job tonight."

McDyess had 28 points and 11 rebounds and Nick Van Exel added 24 points and 11 assists for the Nuggets (28-43), who officially were eliminated from postseason contention. Denver has not made the playoffs since 1995.

"We're still not executing well enough at the end of games," Nuggets coach Dan Issel said. "We gave up a couple of huge offensive rebounds. We're just not playing well enough down the stretch to win some of these games."

Denver has lost five of six and 12 of 14 overall and also has dropped 10 of its last 11 on the road.

"We let them shoot (55) percent on us," Van Exel said. "You're not going to win many games like that, and down the stretch, we didn't execute the way we would have liked to and it hurt us. Something wasn't right for us."

The Hawks held a 65-56 halftime lead behind 18 points from Henderson and 15 from Mutombo. But Van Exel scored 12 points in the third quarter as the Nuggets closed within 91-88 entering the final period.

A basket by Van Exel cut the deficit to 99-97 with 7:02 to play but Mutombo answered with a three-point play and Bimbo Coles hit a jumper to extend Atlanta's lead to 104-97 with six minutes to go.

Rookie James Posey's dunk pulled Denver within 112-109 with 2:12 left. But Van Exel and George McCloud missed 3-pointers and Coles hit two free throws to seal it with 20 seconds remaining.

"We just tried to go for 3 every time," McDyess said. "We got the rebound and didn't execute like we should have. We should have just slowed the ball down and went for a two-pointer."

Rookie Jason Terry scored 12 points and Coles added nine for the Hawks, who made 25-of-31 free throws.

McCloud scored 20 points and Keon Clark added 15 for the Nuggets, who shot 48 percent (43-of-89) and made 18-of-26 from the line.
