Game Story

CHICAGO (Ticker) -- Bob Sura scored 20 points and Lamond Murray added 16, including a crucial 3-pointer in the final minute of the fourth quarter, as the Cleveland Cavaliers handed the Chicago Bulls their 10th loss in 11 games, 86-81.

Cleveland led 60-55 entering the fourth quarter, but the Bulls went on an 8-2 run, capped by a layup from Dickey Simpkins, to take a 63-62 lead with 8:57 remaining.

Sura sparked a 9-3 run, scoring five points including a 3-pointer with 2:30 to play, that gave the Cavaliers a 79-73 advantage. Rookie Elton Brand cut Cleveland's lead to 81-78 on a layup with 41 seconds left, but Murray nailed a 3-pointer from the left sideline with 21 seconds remaining to put the game away.

"It was tooth and nail all the way through," Cleveland coach Randy Wittman said. "I was impressed with our defensive effort, especially down the stretch. We came out determined to win tonight."

Sura went 7-of-13 from the field, including 3-of-4 from 3-point range, as the Cavaliers shot 42 percent (32-of-76) overall and 4-of-7 from behind the arc. Shawn Kemp contributed 10 points and 11 rebounds and reserve Brevin Knight added 10 points and six assists for Cleveland.

The Cavaliers rebounded from a last-second three-point loss against Toronto on Tuesday to win for only the third time in 12 games and improve to 9-27 on the road this season.

"This was a tough one, especially after the one we lost last night," Kemp said. "Tonight we had a lot of good quality shots and we didn't turn over the ball as much. Bobby and Brevin played terrific tonight and you need that, especially with back-to-back games and on the road -- for your bench to step up as they did."

Brand scored 27 points on 13-of-21 shooting and Hersey Hawkins added 20 for Chicago, which has lost 18 of its last 20 games and at 14-56 is one game ahead of the Los Angeles Clippers for the worst record in the NBA.

"We were very tight at the end, but that's much better than getting blown out," Brand said. "We had an opportunity to win this game and we played hard."

The Cavaliers opened the third quarter with a 44-37 lead, but Chicago scored the first six points to pull within one. Cleveland responded with a 14-6 run as Andrew DeClercq scored four points, Murray added three and Wesley Person's 21-foot jumper allowed the Cavaliers to move out to a 58-49 advantage with 3:36 remaining.

Despite shooting 26 percent (5-of-19) in the third quarter, Cleveland held on to a five-point lead.

Chicago led 24-22 after the first quarter, but the Cavaliers shot 47 percent (8-of-17) in the second quarter and limited the Bulls to 31 percent shooting (6-of-19) and 13 points to grab a 44-37 cushion.

Chris Anstey had 18 points and 11 rebounds off the bench for the Bulls, who lost starting guard Randy Brown to a hyperextended knee in the third quarter and did not return.

Besides Brand and Hawkins, the other starters for the Bulls combined for 10 points. Rookie Ron Artest went 1-for-8 shooting and scored only three points, Simpkins scored four and Brown made 1-of-8 shots for three points before leaving the game.

The Bulls shot 38 percent (31-of-81), including 6-of-19 3-pointers, and outrebounded Cleveland, 43-39.

"I think tonight was one of those nights where we didn't shoot the ball well, and we've had plenty of games like that," Hawkins said. "But our defense has been sound. Tonight our defense allowed us to hang around and keep us in a position to make a couple of shots and win."
