Game Story

ATLANTA (Ticker) -- The Phoenix Suns did not need Kevin Johnson to dress. They also did not need to expend much energy against the lowly Atlanta Hawks.

Rodney Rogers scored 21 points off the bench on 8-of-11 shooting to lead six players in double figures as Phoenix handed the Hawks their worst loss in franchise history, 118-74.

"I'm surprised it wasn't the worst game in league history," Hawks forward Roshown McLeod said. "You can't be mad, because if you're mad you're wasting your time."

Shawn Marion had 16 points and Cliff Robinson added 14 for the Suns, who posted their second-largest margin of victory this season, after crushing the Los Angeles Clippers, 114-68, on February 2.

"We needed that for several different reasons," Phoenix coach Scott Skiles said. "It was an opportunity to rest guys on a back-to-back situation, and bench guys were able to get in and get a long run. All around, it was an impressive effort."

Phoenix improved to 2-2 since losing All-Star guard Jason Kidd for the remainder of the regular season and signing Johnson. Summoned out of retirement to fill the void left by Kidd, Johnson did not dress as he continues to get into game shape.

Rookie Jason Terry and Jimmy Jackson scored 11 points apiece for Atlanta, which committed 23 turnovers en route to its fourth loss in five games and 15th in its last 19. The loss matched the highest margin of defeat in club history after the Los Angeles Lakers routed Atlanta, 134-90, on January 7, 1972.

"It's embarrassing," said Atlanta coach Lenny Wilkens, the winningest coach in NBA history. "I've never had a loss like that."

Don MacLean scored a season-high 13 points off the bench, Todd Day added 11 points and Penny Hardaway had 10 points, seven rebounds and 11 assists for Phoenix, which shot 52 percent (49-of-94), including 8-of-12 from 3-point range.

The Suns scored 26 points off 23 turnovers and outrebounded Atlanta, 49-40.

Atlanta committed nine turnovers, including six by Terry, in the first quarter as Phoenix took a 26-22 lead.

Rogers, who scored 21 points in the first half, led the Suns on a 28-8 surge to close out the second period. He had two 3-pointers and eight points in the run, Robinson added seven points and Marion contributed six as the Suns limited the Hawks to 25 percent (5-of-20) shooting in the second quarter and built a 62-36 cushion.

Marion scored six points in an 11-2 run in the third quarter, capped by a 3-pointer from former Hawk Randy Livingston, as the Suns extended their cushion to 83-48. A layup by McClean with 24 seconds remaining allowed Phoenix to move out to a 91-53 advantage after three quarters. The Suns led by as many as 47 points in the fourth.

"I think we did what we had to do tonight, get off to a good start and then they kind of folded," said Livingston, who played for Atlanta in the 1997-98 season. "We needed a game like this, especially after the Miami game where we didn't play particularly well."

The Suns suffered an 81-78 loss to Miami on Wednesday.

The Hawks shot 35 percent (28-of-79) as McLeod went 3-of-11 from the field and scored six points, Jackson went 5-of-12 from outside and rookie Dion Glover shot 2-of-11 and scored six points.
