Game Story

LOS ANGELES (Ticker) -- Ray Allen scored 35 points and Sam Cassell added 15 and 16 assists as the Milwaukee Bucks stayed in the thick of the playoff race with a 104-85 victory over the Los Angeles Clippers.

Glenn Robinson added 17 points for the Bucks, who moved within 2 1/2-games of the Orlando Magic for the eighth and final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference with 11 games left.

Milwaukee, which continues its three-game road trip Sunday in Portland, has won two in a row away from home after a six-game losing streak.

Jeff McInnis scored a career-high 20 points and dished out seven assists while Tyrone Nesby contributed 17 points and Derek Anderson 16 for Los Angeles, which lost its ninth straight game. The Clippers remained one game behind Chicago in the battle to avoid the NBA cellar.

The lowly Clippers managed to make the contest somewhat competitive until the second quarter, when their three-point lead was erased with an 18-7 run by Milwaukee. Allen gave the Bucks an eight-point advantage with a driving dunk with 3:03 left in the first half.

"They were playing bad in the first half, then Ray Allen got hot. He hit a lot of tough shots," said Clippers guard Eric Piatkowski, who scored 10 points. "It's been our defense. We're just not getting to the shooter, although Allen was tough tonight."

Allen keyed a 12-7 spurt that started the third quarter with six points, closing the run with a dunk that put Milwaukee ahead, 59-49, with 6:16 left.

"We've struggled a bit," Allen said. "An important lesson for any goach or player on a team with talent is that you've got to play hard. That's what makes a team work."

The Clippers closed the deficit to eight points but the Bucks went on a 19-9 run to close out the quarter. Los Angeles fell behind by 20 points in the fourth en route to its 10th loss in its last 11 home games.

"We're a selfish team," Piatkowski said. "We don't play together consistantly and when we get behind by 10 points, everyone just starts shooting."

Darvin Ham collected 10 points and Tim Thomas came of the bench to chip in nine for Milwaukee, which shot 49 percent (43-for-87) from the field and outscored Los Angeles, 58-26, on points in the paint.

Ervin Johnson and Danny Manning grabbed nine rebounds apiece and Robinson had seven as the Bucks held a 48-38 edge in rebounding. They scored 27 fast-break points compared to just six for the Clippers.

Michael Olowokandi had 12 points and 10 rebounds for Los Angeles, which shot 40 percent (32-for-80).
