Game Story

MIAMI (Ticker) -- There's nothing like an unexpected night off.

Alonzo Mourning scored 15 points in 18 minutes as the Miami Heat clinched a playoff spot, avenged a pair of embarrassing losses to the Eastern Conference-worst Chicago Bulls and remained atop the Atlantic Division with an easy 105-80 victory.

The Bulls held the Heat to an average of 80.5 points in two triumphs, including a 92-85 overtime win in their first visit to American Airlines Arena on January 18.

But Miami took it to Chicago from the outset tonight as Mourning scored 11 first-quarter points, staking the Heat to a 29-19 advantage they would not surrender.

Mourning knocked down 7-of-10 shots and got a half night's rest. Coach Pat Riley pulled him early in the third quarter as the Heat earned a season series split with the floundering Bulls.

"We were committed from the beginning, wire to wire," Riley said. "We showed a lot of respect for them as they are a team that has beaten us twice already. We need to work on having that constant effort for the full 48 minutes."

Tim Hardaway scored 16 points and reserves Clarence Weatherspoon, Otis Thorpe and rookie Rodney Buford added 10 apiece for the Heat, who moved one game ahead of idle New York atop the Atlantic.

"We needed to come out hard and play like that and get the `W'," Hardaway said. "Defense was big in tonight's game. We were in their face tonight and didn't give them good looks."

Miami has won 15 of its last 16 home contests and pulled within two games of idle Indiana for the top spot in the Eastern Conference. The Pacers and Heat are the only teams in the East to clinch a postseason berth.

"It's nice to clinch a playoff berth but our goals are bigger than that," Mourning said. "We have a chance to go all the way and we need to continue to play well. We're considered an elite team and we're not supposed to lose against teams like this."

Rookie Elton Brand scored 17 points for the Bulls, who failed to scored 90 for the seventh straight game. Chicago is just one-half game better than the league-worst Los Angeles Clippers, who host Milwaukee later tonight.

"The game tonight was determined early as far as how it was going to be played," Chicago coach Tim Floyd said. "They outran our big (guys) early in the game and really put us back on our heels. The first phase of what we tried to do defensively is to get back and contain. They beat us back in transition. They had 21 fast-break points."

"I don't think it was a lack of effort tonight, just a lack of execution," Brand said. "They were much tougher in the post, dropping people down and helping out. The Heat are a team that always plays hard regardless of who they are playing."`gggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggt and dunked for a three-point play to put the Heat ahead to stay, 15-11, with 7:11 remaining in the first quarter. He added two more slams before the period was over, giving Miami a 10-point cushion.

Jamal Mashburn scored nine of his 12 points in the first half as the Heat opened a 53-39 bulge at the break. Miami shot 53 percent (38-of-71), held a 39-31 advantage on the boards and scored 25 points off turnovers. The Heat also collected a season-high 17 steals.

Fred Hoiberg scored 15 points, going 11-of-11 from the line, and Corey Benjamin added 12 for Chicago, which shot 47 percent (27-of-58) and did not seem to fare any better against Miami's backupshe margin to 84-64 with 7:45 to play as Mourning, Hardaway and Mashburn enjoyed the view from the bench.

"When we have an opportunity to break, we need to get out and run hard," Riley said. "We especially got a lot of energy from our bench. Bruce (Bowen), Anthony (Carter) and Rodney did a good job."
