Game Story

PORTLAND, Oregon (Ticker) -- Volatile Portland Trail Blazers forward Rasheed Wallace was not too happy about his team's longest home losing streak in over four years.

Wallace started and finished strong, scoring a team season-high 34 points as the Blazers snapped a four-game skid at the Rose Garden with a 96-85 triumph over the Dallas Mavericks.

Wallace, who usually piles up the technicals when things are not going well for Portland, let his game do his talking tonight. The 6-11 All-Star hit 16-of-22 shots, grabbed nine rebounds, handed out four assists and blocked a shot in 42 minutes.

"Rasheed Wallace had a great game offensively," Portland coach Mike Dunleavy said. "He's got a great stroke. He has the ability to pop out and set pick and rolls. But he is not the kind of guy that wants or demands the ball. In the three years I have been here, I can't remember a time when he's come over and asked for the ball. He is a real team player."

Wallace scored 16 first-quarter points to stake the Blazers to a 25-19 lead and added six more in crunch time as Portland finished the contest with a 12-5 run after Dallas threatened to extend its funk.

"We had no answer for Rasheed," Dallas coach Don Nelson said. "He was inside, outside, he did it all. That's what star players are supposed to do."

Wallace did not make himself available to the media after the game despite falling just four points shy of his career high.

"He played a great game," Portland forward Scottie Pippen said of Wallace. "We need more games out of him like that."

Steve Smith scored 22 points and Pippen added 19 for the Blazers, who have won nine straight home contests against the Mavericks.

"The win was good for us," Smith said. "Sometimes a win brings better spirits in the locker room. We were all talking out there and scrambling around. We played 48 minutes instead of having lapses."

Michael Finley scored 30 points for Dallas, which had won seven of its previous 10 contests and lost the season series, 2-1.

"They didn't shut me down in the fourth quarter. I just missed some shots," said Finley, who managed just two points over the final 12 minutes. "Overall, we all got good looks at the basket tonight and we were still in the game at the end."

Dirk Nowitzki scored 16 points and rookie Greg Buckner added 12 off the bench for the Mavericks, who pulled within 84-80 on Finley's jumper with 6:04 to play.

But Pippen answered with a driving dunk and Wallace made a layup, a dazzling 13-foot hook shot and a 14-footer to make it 92-82 with 2:19 remaining.

Point guards Damon Stoudamire and Greg Anthony combined for 12 points and nine assists for Portland, which shot 54 percent (39-of-72) and held a 36-33 advantage on the boards. The Blazers kept the Mavericks in the game by yielding 23 points off turnovers.

"We basically have been winning one and then losing one," Anthony said of Portland's 7-8 mark since having a season-high 11-game winning streak snapped by the league-leading Los Angeles Lakers on February 29. "I thought we finished strong, defended well against some good perimeter players. We did what we had to do defensively and just did enough offensively."

Wallace was unconscious from the opening tip. He buried four straight jumpers before missing a layup and quickly came back with two slams and a pair of 20-footers as Portland opened a 25-15 advantage with 33 seconds left in the opening period.

The Blazers buried 6-of-11 3-pointers, while the Mavs went 3-of-21 from long range.
