Game Story

AUBURN HILLS, Michigan (Ticker) -- In the span of 13 seconds, Cliff Robinson shut down the Detroit Pistons on both ends of the floor.

Robinson scored 20 points, including the go-ahead jumper with 13 seconds left in the fourth quarter, and made a key block on Grant Hill in the final seconds as the Phoenix Suns pulled out a 98-97 victory over the Pistons.

Phoenix led by as many as seven points early in the fourth quarter, but Jerry Stackhouse drained a 3-pointer with 7:12 left to give Detroit a 79-78 advantage.

A layup by Christian Laettner allowed the Pistons to take a 91-88 lead with just over three minutes to play, but the Suns went on an 8-2 run, capped by a 3-pointer from Rodney Rogers with 1:34 left to put Phoenix ahead, 96-93.

Lindsey Hunter and Stackhouse sank two free throws each as Detroit grabbed a 97-96 lead with 27 seconds to play. But Robinson drained a 16-foot jumper from the right sideline with 13 seconds to go as Phoenix took a one-point lead.

"We called that play. It's been a play we've been using all year," said Robinson, who went 8-of-13 from the field. "We hadn't used it all night and that was a good opportunity for us to use it because they don't have shotblockers. I was able to get a switch and get a good shot off."

With one last chance for Detroit, Hill's potential game-winning shot was blocked by Robinson. Hill regained possession, but his second attempt was blocked by Oliver Miller as the buzzer sounded.

"At times we certainly played well enough to win, but we didn't sustain it," Detroit coach George Irvine said. "In the fourth quarter, we were terrific effortwise. It came down to making a stop and we didn't and converting on the offensive end and we didn't."

Rogers scored 17 points off the bench and Penny Hardaway added 15 and a season-high 12 assists for Phoenix, which improved to 3-2 since losing All-Star guard Jason Kidd for the remainder of the regular season due to an ankle injury. Kevin Johnson remained on the sidelines as he continues to get into game shape. He was summoned out of retirement when Kidd was hurt.

"We're very happy to have that one," Phoenix coach Scott Skiles said. "We played a lot better in the last month or so in close games. Early in the season we had a tendency to freeze up a bit. We don't do that much anymore. We feel like we can win."

Hill scored 28 points and Stackhouse added 19 for Detroit, which suffered its third loss in four games and is percentage points ahead of eighth-place Orlando in the Eastern Conference.

"Its always tough to lose at home," said Hunter, who scored 15 points. "It doesn't matter what the situation is or what the circumstance might be. You have to take care of business at home. There's nothing else we can do at this point. We have to keep fighting."

Robinson scored 12 points in the first quarter as Phoenix took a 24-21 lead. Rogers came off the bench to score eight in the second period as the Suns moved out to a 10-point lead and entered the third quarter with a 51-44 advantage.

A layup by Todd Day with 1:15 remaining in the third quarter allowed the Suns to take their largest lead of the game lead at 72-62. John Crotty made an 18-foot jumper and Hill sank two free throws to cut Phoenix's lead to six going into the fourth quarter.

Randy Livingston and Don MacLean scored 13 points each for Phoenix, which shot 46 percent (37-of-79), including 9-of-25 from 3-point range.

Hill went 8-of-20 from the field and sank 12-of-13 free throws and Stackhouse made only 5-of-21 shots. Laettner added 12 points and seven rebounds for Detroit, which outrebounded the Suns, 51-34, and shot 39 percent (33-of-84).
