Game Story

CHICAGO (Ticker) -- Elden Campbell scored 18 of his 25 points in the second half and Eddie Jones added 23, including two free throws with 3.8 seconds left, to secure the Charlotte Hornets' sixth straight victory, 90-87 over the Chicago Bulls.

Nothing but pride was on the line for Chicago, but the Hornets came in with a winning streak that had them within reach of homecourt advantage in the first round of the Eastern Conference playoffs. The fifth-place Hornets moved one game behind Philadelphia and one ahead of Toronto.

"We have confidence down the stretch that we can win ballgames and the last two games we have taken them down to the wire but we found ways to win," Jones said.

Anthony Mason hit four straight free throws to give Charlotte an 87-79 lead with 1:15 left in the fourth quarter. Chicago ran off the next six points and got within 87-85 on a free throw by Elton Brand with 15 seconds to go.

Charlotte's David Wesley was fouled but made just 1-of-2 free throws, giving the Bulls a chance. Brand got free for a dunk with 5.1 seconds left, but Jones was fouled as soon as he took the inbounds pass and hit both free throws.

"We gave them confidence early and they hung around all the way to the end," Jones said. "We always know we're going to get a game from them, they're not just going to lay down for anybody. They're a group of young guys that want to win and get better. The reason that (Bulls rookies Ron) Artest and Brand aren't getting any attention is because they're playing on a team that's not competing."

Chicago was led by Brand, who scored 24 points, and Artest, who added 20.

"We played well tonight," Brand said. "We had some big leads. They had some big leads. But their final push put them ahead and we could not come back."

The Bulls squandered a 10-point first-quarter lead, then built another 10-point advantage in the second before giving back most of it.

Brand hit a 10-footer with 6:18 to go in the first, giving the Bulls a 17-7 lead. But Charlotte reeled off the next eight points, including a layup and 19-foot jumper by Wesley, both off passes from Mason. When Mason made a layup, the Hornets were within 17-15 with 2:54 left. They outscored the Bulls, 6-3, the rest of the quarter to take a 21-20 edge.

Chicago led by 10 points twice in the second period, but Jones scored five and Campbell three over the final three minutes of the half as the Hornets pulled within 43-39 at the break.

The Hornets turned it around in the third quarter, outscoring Chicago 32-17 to go up 71-60 heading into the fourth. The Hornets hit 12-of-18 shots in the quarter and forced eight turnovers.

Campbell also had nine rebounds and Mason had 15 points, nine rebounds and seven assists for Charlotte, which played without Derrick Coleman, who has an inflamed left knee and did not make the trip to Chicago.

Randy Brown and Corey Benjamin scored 11 points apiece for Chicago.

Chicago forward Fred Hoiberg sprained his left ankle in the third quarter and did not return.
