Game Story

VANCOUVER, British Columbia (Ticker) -- Vancouver Grizzlies coach Lionel Hollins lost his temper and his team lost the game.

Dirk Nowitzki scored 15 of his 22 points in the third quarter as the Dallas Mavericks overcame a triple-double by Mike Bibby and continued their mastery of the Grizzlies with a 100-86 victory.

Vancouver led 29-20 early in the second quarter when Hollins was whistled for his first technical foul. The coach was livid over an offensive foul on Shareef Abdur-Rahim that he perceived to be a makeup call. Seconds earlier, Mavericks coach Don Nelson complained to officials about a non-call against the Grizzlies.

A series of calls throughout the half incensed the interim coach but the one against his star forward was the final straw.

"They put me over the edge," Hollins said of the officails. "It was a series of calls. They called things I haven't seen called all year. Our was posting up, he gets the ball and the guy flops and we get a dislodging call. We got an over-the-back call and a five-second count on a post up. They could call that every night two or three times a game. But it wasn't even the right call."

Vancouver appeared rattled by the incident and Dallas took advantage, using a 22-4 run over the rest of the period to take a 42-33 lead at halftime. Hollins picked up his second technical and was ejected at the end of the second quarter.

The Grizzlies scored 11 points in the period, matching their season-low for any quarter this season.

"I think we tried to stay focused and let (the ejection) fire us up but it was a situation we'd never really been in before so I don't think as a team we knew how to respond to it."

Nowitzki hit three of the Mavericks' five 3-pointers in the third quarter, extending the lead to 74-58 entering the final period.

Dallas took its largest lead, 80-58, on a jumper by Greg Buckner with 10:17 to play and coasted the rest of the way.

"I struggled a little bit in the first half -- a few missed shots and a lot of turnovers," Nowitzki said. "That's why you have to come out and play hard every night. I had a lot of wide open looks in the third quarter and I was able to hit them."

Bibby recorded his first career triple-double with 14 points, 11 assists and 11 rebounds and added seven steals for the Grizzlies, who have lost four straight and 16 of their last 17 games.

"I played all right," Bibby said. "My energy was kind of low in the first half and I tried to pick it up in the second. We were doing well on offense but we just couldn't stop anybody. They were knocking 3s down left and right. That hurt us."

Dallas improved to 8-1 in Vancouver all-time and 15-3 overall against the Grizzlies. The Mavericks have won 12 of their last 19 road games and eight of 12 overall.

"I actually thought it would be a very hard game for us," Nelson said. "I'm a little surprised that we were able to gain such a big lead. Our energy was good other than maybe the first part of the first quarter. We found something that was working. They couldn't stop it so we stayed with it and basically ran the same play for a quarter-and-a-half."

Michael Finley, playing in his 370th consecutive game, scored 18 points, Hubert Davis had 16 and seven rebounds off the bench and Steve Nash added 11 and 10 assists for Dallas, which shot 47 percent (37-of-79) and were perfect (18-of-18) from the foul line.

"There's been a lot of negativity surrounding the organization and we want to get wins to counteract some of that and for our pride," Nash said. "Just build on things to put ourselves in a position to improve and do well next year."

Abdur-Rahim collected 23 points and 10 rebounds and Michael Dickerson had 14 points for the Grizzlies, who shot 41 percent (33-of-81) and yielded 24 points off turnovers.
