Game Story

MIAMI (Ticker) -- The Miami Heat used the lifeless Cleveland Cavaliers to get closer to the Indiana Pacers and further away from the New York Knicks.

Jamal Mashburn led a balanced scoring attack with 17 points as the Heat blew past the Cavaliers early and never looked back, rolling to a 111-85 blowout.

Alonzo Mourning had 15 points and 11 rebounds and Dan Majerle and Tim Hardaway added 14 points apiece for Miami, which has won 17 of its last 18 home games and eight straight meetings with Cleveland.

"We've been working the game tremendously well," Mourning said. "When you're working the game like we are offensively and defensively, everything takes care of itself. We are trying to work the opponent, especially going into the postseason."

Rookie Anthony Carter scored 12 points and P.J. Brown added 11 for the Heat, who used a 14-0 second-quarter run to erase a six-point deficit and pull ahead to stay, 52-44 with 1:36 left in the first half.

"We brought everything from practice and kept it going," Carter said. "We went out in the second quarter and put them away."

Miami (47-26) moved within two games of Eastern Conference-leading Indiana and pulled two games ahead of idle second-place New York in the Atlantic Division.

Wesley Person scored 14 points for Cleveland, which was officially eliminated from postseason contention for the second straight season.

The Cavs (29-45) managed just 12 points in the fourth quarter of Sunday's embarrassing loss to Chicago and was outscored 31-15 and 32-17 in the second and third quarters, respectively, tonight.

"We could never get it back after they made their run," Cleveland coach Randy Wittman said. "That's just the kind of team that we are. We don't have big-time veterans that you can give the ball to and just have them score."

The Heat tied their largest margin of victory and moved a season-high 21 games over .500. Miami shot 54 percent (44-of-82), held a 42-30 rebounding advantage and scored a whopping 32 points off turnovers.

The Heat outscored the Cavaliers, 31-6, on the fast break.

"Our defense got stronger as the game went on," Miami coach Pat Riley said. "We started swarming and getting our hands on the ball. Tonight we started to force some turnovers and run with the ball."

Earl Boykins came off the bench to score 12 points and Shawn Kemp and rookie Andre Miller added 10 points apiece for the Cavaliers, who shot 48 percent (34-of-71).

Mark Bryant made a free throw to give the Cavs a 44-38 lead with 3:58 remaining in the first half. Mourning made a layup and Brown converted a three-point play to spark the Heat's decisive run.

"In the second quarter we came out like gangbusters," Hardaway said. "It was great to have a win with total effort from everyone."

Hardaway's 3-pointer gave Miami the lead for good, 46-44, with 2:37 left in the half before Mashburn made a layup, Mourning dunked and Brown hit a short jumper to make it 52-44 1:36 before intermission.

"It's part of the NBA. We know how quickly a game can change," Kemp said of the 14-0 burst.

"In the third quarter they came out and established themselves even more and they got some easy baskets," Miller said. "We didn't come out prepared in the third quarter, that's why we lost."
