Game Story

WASHINGTON (Ticker) -- It's all over but the mathematics for the slumping New Jersey Nets.

Stephon Marbury's knee continued to have his productiveness limited and the rest of the Nets limped to their third straight loss, a 102-93 drubbing at the hands of the Washington Wizards, all but eliminating New Jersey from the playoff picture.

The Nets fell seven games behind eighth-place Orlando with eight games to play and hardly look like a club about to win the rest of its games. Marbury, who has been bothered by tendinitis in his left knee, managed just 13 points on 5-of-14 shooting in 34 painful minutes. He will undergo an MRI on Wednesday to determine the severity of the injury.

"Certainly he will not play back-to-back," New Jersey coach Don Casey said. "After the MRI, the decision will come. If it's anywhere close to damaged, he will not play for me. I would not put him in a game. He's been too good and worked too hard for this franchise and for his teammates to come up lame. He's a little bit upset about all this. He's been feeling the pressure."

"He can't move. He's not himself anymore," Nets forward Kendall Gill said of his injured teammate. "He's not even half of himself out there. You guys know that's not him out there, so this probably is best. We're not going to go to the playoffs so he might as well rest his leg before he hurts it any more. He's got his whole career to look forward to. Might as well not go screw it up with these eight games we've got left."

The only bright spot in the lifeless effort by the Nets came from seldom-used reserve center Gheorghe Muresan. The 7-7 Romanian pivotman scored eight points in the fourth quarter.

Long eliminated from the playoff race, the Wizards continued building confidence for next season.

Chris Whitney scored 18 points and Juwan Howard added 16 for Washington, which has won seven of its last nine overall, four of five at home and captured the season series from New Jersey, 3-1.

"(Whitney) got after Stephon tonight," Washington coach Darrell Walker said. "Stephon's knees were definitely hurting and you can tell because when he's right, he is virtually unstoppable. Overall, it was a great team effort and a great effort by Chris Whitney making him work."

Keith Van Horn scored 17 of his 24 points in the first half to stake the Nets to a 54-48 advantage at intermission, but New Jersey fell apart late in the third quarter.

Whitney buried a 3-pointer and Howard followed with a pair of short jumpers as Washington moved ahead to stay, 75-72, with two minutes left in the period. Whitney's 17-footer made it a five-point advantage entering the final period.

Whitney, who was 7-of-11 from the floor, had a driving layup and a 22-footer to stretch the margin to 81-74 early in the fourth quarter.

Mitch Richmond and rookie Richard Hamilton scored 13 points apiece and Gerard King added 10 points for Washington, which shot 53 percent (40-of-76) and outscored New Jersey, 54-39, over the final 24 minutes.

"We just want to finish up strong," Richmond said. "The main thing is we got the win. We didn't wait too late to finish it out."

Gill scored 10 points for the Nets, who shot 41 percent (33-of-80) and held a 42-36 rebounding edge.

"Early in the game when they called the first timeout, I thought we had a shot then to go ahead and take care of things," Gill said of the Nets' 6-2 burst to start the game. "But they played very well. Whitney and Juwan and their other role players played really well and we didn't have an answer for them.

"It has been a big disappointment. We just have to go ahead and finish this season and wait till next year and see what happens."

Marbury missed four straight shots in the fourth quarter before limping to the bench with 2:28 to play. Muresan made two free throws, a running jumper, a four-foot hook and made a layup in the final minute, showing the lone signs of life on an otherwise sleepwalking Nets team.
